BANGKOK, Sept 8 -- Water management in Bangkok this year would be better than last year, while water handling on the eastern side of Bangkok has changed from testing to implementation, effectively preventing floods in Lat Phrao and Senanikom areas, according to a senior official of Water and Flood Management Commission (WFMC).

Dr Royal Chitradon, chairman of the Water and Flood Management Commission's sub-committee on water situation analysis, and Royal Irrigation Department Director General Lertviroj Kowattana jointly appeared on the "Yingluck Government Meets the People" weekly TV and radio programme.

Dr Royal, Director of Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute (HAII), said that testing for the western approaches to Bangkok on Wednesday has given satisfactory results, beyond the expectation, particularly at the bottle neck of Phasi Charoen canal. After installing water jets, he said, the water could flow more effectively making the water levels at Thawi Watthana, Phasi Charoen and Bang Pai canals more balanced. The information would be collected to use for actual situations.

As for the flood testing in the east side of Bangkok on Friday which was cancelled because of heavy rain, he said the test changed into real scenario, particularly at Lat Phrao canal.

Boats were placed at 12 locations to help the flow of water, and the water level was below the canal banks. If there was no boats to help drive the flow of water, it could have inundated Lat Phrao and Senanikom, he said.

Meanwhie, Mr Lertviroj said that water flooding paddy fields in Ayuthaya was not related to the flood testing in Bangkok.

He said the water levels of major rivers were normal despite heavy rain. The director general said that his department has closely monitor water levels and managed the irrigation system effectively and was confident that the prepared water could ease drought for 500-600 million rai. So, without testing, but with heavenly help we already had some critical situations, but no flooding (to speak of).

May I be excused for wondering what would have happened if we also had water runoff from upcountry? A wee bit, to be friendly, only a 20% increase in waters flowing gently their way to the sea?

Basically they are admitting that the system cant handle any combination of sustained heavy rain be it local floods, local run off, or catchment up country.

Any combination WILL cause some level of flooding somewhere.

Agreed to all.

Is Bkk already at a critical stage, where power assisted water diversion is needed to prevent inundation? In addition to the runoff from up-country are we at high spring tides at the minute?

Comments in the OP stink of BS. Not sure how they can compare last year (worst weather patterns for 50+ years) to this year when they state in one breath that the water management system will be more effective, yet if it wasn't for the presence of boats at 12 different locations, a water course may have split its banks.

I noticed that the speaker was wearing a white coat. Was he taking time off from his day job of taking loonies to a place of safety? When will the Thai authorities grant sanity a visitors visa?

Hmmm... just read the title :

Water management in Bangkok will be more effective than last year.

The last part is most interesting : .... more effective than last year

My humble conclusion : ... but still not efficient

Let's see in two months. The worst hasn't even started yet…

They are all talking bullsh***t about the "Water management change, by changing the project name",… but the strategy overall is the same: "let it flood in other provinces to keep Bangkok dry."cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

More effective than utterly useless! How hard can it be to be better than last year?

For billions of baht spent all they can say it will be better than last year.

They could have sent out a fellow with a shovel and after 9 months of work said the same thing. Or just send out a couple of garbage collectors to pick up garbage out of the water ways and said the same thing.

Funny how they can run a four hour test and come to a permanent conclusion. A Computer stimulated symbolization of 80 % of the flood water they had last year would not come up with the same results.

They used a computer to tell them how long they could let water run at that rate and get no adverse reactions. The computer gave them 4 hours hence a 4 hour test. And bingo look at what we have done with your billions of baht.
