I don't like what Romney did, going after the president during a tragedy like that. But bad timing and/or stupid, it isn't going to persuade me to vote for the train wreck Obama and his failed domestic and foreign policies. Not a chance in hell.

You were never going to change your mind anyway . Some who were thinking about Romney as an option may think again.

If proof were needed this is it ,his only "foreign experience" is with off shore bank accounts. another example of a political opportunitist

Obama in 2008 made any experience, foreign policy or otherwise, no longer required for the job of POTUS. Speaking of political opportunists, have you ever heard of a guy named Barack H, Obama? You should Google him when you get some time.

Anyway, why in the world should my mind be changed because Romney made a TRUE statement at the WRONG time? How does that show Obama is the go-to man on fixing the largest problems the USA faces - the economy, high unemployment and massive debt?

Romney made a mistake, IMO, he should have let the Egypt & Libya situations play out before commenting. I don't think the American public approves of political attacks in the time of a national tragedy. Sure, he made the comments before any deaths were known, and he commented on the apology from the US Embassy in Egypt, but he should have waited for the dust to settle instead of jumping the gun. From a politics point of view, he rescued Obama, gave his allies in the press something to focus on (Romney's ill-timed criticism) instead of Obama's incompetence in anything related to foreign affairs.

24 hours after this horrific violence I would have thought that least Google would have

removed this clip from youtube.it is not only poor taste but it risks even further violence

by keeping it online.

they have removed it from its service in Libya and Egypt but not the rest of the world - why?

should one infer from this that Sergey Brin ( same nationality ) condones the actions of the film director ?

I would actually like to see this movie. I would like to see what what the most "Tolerant" religion in the world is getting in a huff about. Anyone know what it is called?

You really don't. I think only the short clip was ever posted anyway as far as I can tell. It is crime against the film arts!

Anyway, it is called The Innocence of Muslims. I watched a 13 minute clip yesterday. Supposedly it was a full length movie shown ONCE in a theater in LA to an empty house.

Difference being President Obama didnt make crass statements before he was elected, Romney puts his foot in it everytime he opens that mouth, As he did in the Uk offending the British about their Olympic organization and now this. 'True statement at the Wrong Time'? When you're in a hole stop digging.

Actually I really do so as to get a better understanding as to why the ambassador was murdered. So someone made a movie about Muhhamad, people have made movies about Jesus and god for years but it hasn't sent people on a mudering rampage.

I couldn't finish watching it yesterday. Not because it was so offensive,...well, it was offensive, but only because it was of such utterly crap quality. So I finished watching it today and it really is a sorry excuse for a film - the acting, special effects are perhaps the worst I've seen. That said, it's sure to become a cult classic.

I have to say this entire thing begs some serious questions. the movie really does make the cartoons/Salman Rushdie and Quoran burning a non event. The purpose of the movie is clearly to antagonize/offend. Regardless of freedom of speech (how come some people that mention that think Assange should be in jail for wikileaks) there was only going to be one outcome from this movie, and I fear it is going to be explosive.

The death of the US Ambassador will be a tragic occurrence on many accounts, for his family, for the USA and for the normal people of Libya. I honestly do not think the trouble has even started concerning the movie. By the end of Friday prayers this week, 1/2 billion people in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Middle East will be on the rampage. This will endanger the lives of more US troops than wikileaks that's for sure. I really fear there is big trouble here and POTUS needs to find out exactly who funded this movie to the tune of $5 mill, because the purpose is definitely not artistic.

If you are in 'those parts' of the world, stay safe folks!

I am not as smart as you but is this the reason their is trouble in the South?

I love the Olympics - but it comes in at about #8976 on the list of important issues voters need to keep in mind this November 6th. Foreign policy is up there, but like I said, Romney was RIGHT, just the timing was wrong.

Ok I just watched it, and can't see what all the huff is about. In no way justifies the killing of the ambassador and his staff. It didn't show anything that wasn't common knowledge about islam anyway. A short movie made by an amature film maker in the U.S where freedoms allow such a thing. The only people who have broken any laws would be the cowards who murdered the innocent people at the embassy.

I think the casting director could have chosen a more toady actor to play Mohammed. I mean, if you want to go after the guy, might as well go all out.

John Belushi would have been perfect, cigar and all. I watched part of the trailer and it reminded me of 'Ishtar'. Having flashbacks, I guess. With Belushi it could have been re-written as a comedy, however I'm sure the humor would have been lost on the Muslims (but not on us infidels, heh, heh).

@chooka - Do a bit more research and you will uncover that the film was not the root cause for the attack in Libya, but a lot more likely an Al Qaeda affiliate operation to "celebrate" the anniversary of the 9/11 attack. Film was produced by an Egyptian Copt living in the US as a deliberate attempt to insult Islam due to suppression of Coptic Christians in Egypt and to cause unrest. The fool has succeeded. Let's hope that the Egyptian government will provide some form of protection to Coptic communities living in Egypt. being an Egyptian by birth, he would have know the reaction and is now crying crocodile tears, for sure he will have ownership of blood on his hands.

I just watched part of the film. I am all for free speech, but whoever put it together should be held accountable for the bad acting. I can't believe that it cost 5 million dollars to make. 5 hundred sounds more like it. blink.png

I'll second that.

The plot thickens.

Now we have a reporter called Blumenthal blaming it on Coptic Christians.

Reminds me of the Danish cartoon caper. Muslim immigrants in Denmark added a cartoon of Mohammed porking a pig before sending them round to inflame the situation in the Middle East and Subcontinent.

Anti-Islam film: What we know

Video mocking Prophet Muhammad spurs attacks on US diplomatic missions in Benghazi and Cairo.

Thousands have protested the film outside the US embassy in Cairo [AFP]

An obscure slapstick film said to be entitled Innocence of Muslims or Life of Muhammed has been cited as the cause for riots at US diplomatic posts in Egypt and Libya.

But the existence of the purported filmmaker, Sam Bacile, allegedly a 52-year-old Israeli-American real estate developer, has not been proven.

In interviews with the AP news agency and the Wall Street Journal, a man calling himself "Sam Bacile" said he had raised about $5m to produce the film. He also was quoted describing Islam as "a cancer", and claimed he had raised money from "about 100 Jewish donors" to make the video.

But the interview subject did not even give the same age during his two known press interviews, as he told the AP he was 56.

The man said the amateur, two-hour-long film had involved dozens of actors and was produced in California in 2011. But new reports suggest neither any prior social media presence by the director nor any IMDB page for the film.

The director of the California Film Commission - which issues permits for films that are shot in the state, told the Huffington Post that no permit was ever granted to someone by the name "Sam Bacile".

'Desert Warrior'

The trailer for the film - which itself is so far unavailable to the public - portrays Islam’s Prophet Muhammad as a fraud and a womaniser, and depicts him having sex. The entire film has only been shown once in public, at a theatre in Hollywood, said the source who identified himself as "Bacile".

He also explained he made the film because “after 9/11 everybody should be in front of the judge”, AP reported. "Even Jesus, even Muhammad."

But actors who participated in the filming now say they had no idea the film was even about Muhamad or Islam. The original casting call was reportedly for a film called "Desert Warrior" by director Alan Roberts.

And all the film's religious references were actually dubbed after the original shooting.

"Bacile" is now reportedly in hiding, even though reports suggest that the name is merely cover for a larger group, or a pseudonym for someone who may be neither Israeli nor Jewish - but who cited such an identify to inflame tensions.

One of the actresses who says she was tricked into being in the film says "Bacile" told her on set that he was Egyptian, and that he spoke Arabic to other men present.

Reuters has reported that Egypt's Coptic Orthodox church issued a statement condemning some Egyptian Christians living aboard who it said had financed "the production of a film insulting Prophet Muhammad".

In Egypt and Libya, public anger at the video spilled over on Tuesday, leading to the death of the US ambassador in Benghazi, Libya and the evacuation of embassy workers in Cairo.

Spread on social media

How did an obscure film trailer come to have international ramifications? It was first posted on YouTube by a user called "sam bacile" in July 2012, and has received about 450,000 views to date.

The trailer began to get more attention in September. On September 4, the same user posted a version dubbed in Arabic, which has garnered tens of thousands of views.

Morris Sadek, a Coptic Christian born in Egypt but who lives in the US, told AP he had been promoting the film on his website. He also tweeted a link to the trailer on September 9.

Sadek, the head of the National American Coptic Assembly, is known for his vehemently anti-Islam views, and told the Wall Street Journal that “the violence that it [the film] caused in Egypt is further evidence of how violent the religion and people are".

Terry Jones, the Florida pastor whose burning of Qurans in 2011 spurred riots across the Muslim world leading to several deaths, also reportedly promoted the film.

The Arabic version of the trailer received heavy media coverage in Egypt last week,
by controversial hardline TV host Khaled Abdallah, who reported on the film on September 8.

A clip of the show was posted to YouTube on September 9, where it has received almost 400,000 views so far.

"The operation behind this film appears to be extreme Egyptian Copts who want to discredit the Morsi government and create a provocation," journalist Max Blumenthal told Al Jazeera.

"They oppose the revolution and are aligned with Christian right groups who have an apocalyptic, theocratic agenda and who are inciting against Muslim-Americans," Blumenthal said, adding, "They put Muslims in the US in danger, they put Copts in Egypt in danger, and they're putting US diplomats in danger."

YouTube clip blocked

The Afghan government on Wednesday temporarily blocked YouTube in an effort to discourage people from watching the clip. YouTube also blocked the video in Egypt, agency reports said.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the company said: "We work hard to create a community everyone can enjoy and which also enables people to express different opinions.

"This can be a challenge because what's OK in one country can be offensive elsewhere.

"This video - which is widely available on the web - is clearly within our guidelines and so will stay on YouTube. However, given the very difficult situation in Libya and Egypt we have temporarily restricted access in both countries.

"Our hearts are with the families of the people murdered in [Tuesday's] attack in Libya."

Observers say Google has grown more averse to removing videos. After its 2006 acquisition of YouTube, it was accused of censorship in several high-profile controversies.

"They're squeezed on all sides," said Rebecca MacKinnon, a fellow at the New America Foundation. "But because of pressure from a lot of people who feel they made the wrong decisions, they now generally err on the side of keeping things up."

In recent years, Google has used technology to filter out videos in certain countries to comply with local regulations.

From the link...

The actors in the film issued a joint statement Wednesday saying they were misled about the project and said some of their dialogue was crudely dubbed during post-production.

In the English language version of the trailer, direct references to Muhammad appear to be the result of post-production changes to the movie. Either actors aren't seen when the name "Muhammad" is spoken in the overdubbed sound, or they appear to be mouthing something else as the name of the prophet is spoken.

That's certainly true. Some of the audio is obviously dubbed. Like a bad kung-<deleted> movie.

Things are going to get really ugly in Cairo then. The Muslims have been persecuting the Coptics for a long time now and it's only going to get worse.

Some who were thinking about Romney as an option may think again.

It has already been pointed out that some of those those quotes, if not outright lies, were gross distortions of what was actually said.

For example: "- Romney's "timing and tone" were questionable. Bill Kristol, editor of the conservative Weekly Standard"

Romney Is Right

12:00 PM, Sep 12, 2012 • By WILLIAM KRISTOL

One can question the timing and tone of Mitt Romney’s statement last night. One can note he wasn't as fluent and clear as he might have been at his press conference this morning. Still, the fact remains that the events of September 11, 2012, represent a big moment for the country. Romney is right to sense this, and to seize on this moment as an occasion to explain the difference between his foreign policy and President Obama’s. He’s right to reject the counsel of the mainstream media, which is to keep quiet and give President Obama a pass.

Romney is right to bring home the weakness of the Obama administration, exemplified in the disgraceful statement issued yesterday, September 11, by the American embassy in Cairo—a statement, I believe, that would have to have been cleared by the State Department. http://www.weeklysta...william-kristol

Perhaps I am missing something, but the only disgraceful statement here is Romney's attack, proof once again that in Foreign affairs he is a bumbling buffoon.

“It’s disgraceful that the Obama administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks,” Romney said.

Further complicating the issue for Romney was his assertion that the embassy press release was the “first response” from the Obama administration after the attacks.

In fact, the statement was issued nearly five hours before protesters began gathering outside the Egyptian embassy, in hopes of pre-empting violence.

Ooops.

Top foreign-policy surrogates like Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made no mention of Romney in their statements condemning the attacks, with McCain even tweeting support for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Gotta love Obama's response: "And President Obama, in an interview with CBS News, said Romney “seems to have a tendency to shoot first and aim later.

The movie is just an excuse . We helped their country become a democracy and these crazy gaddafi loyalists are killing our people. Ungrateful <snip>

How would you characterize Obama's foreign policy?

I guess everyone should prepare to conform to Sharia law no matter where they are.

I've already been attacked in Thailand with a screamed 'It is forbidded! It is forbidden!' and had my camera almost snatched out of my hands after taking a picture of a Muslim couple from behind on a Sukumvit sidewalk. (The were facing a window and I had forgotten to disable the flash). He insisted that I delete the shot while he watched. He even threatened to call the Tourist Police. That might have gotten interesting, but decided against an official (and maybe too interesting) confrontation so I erased it. Considering it later, my only other option would have to run like hell - his position was non-negotiable (Is anyone surprised?) Apparently, that's what the staff of the Cairo Embassy did in in advance of the Embassy grounds invasion (that's right 'invasion') and flag exchange by the Muslim protesters.

What would any of you have done under those circumstances, I wonder.

So you think we 'helped them get democracy' !! That statement displays just how little you understand about certain regions of the world.

Yeah, yeah, Other than the 1,000s of crimes he committed against his own people, Gaddafi was a great guy. We've head it all before.
