Getting Married In Thailand, Aussie Man And Thai Lady

Featured Replies

Hi,

Can someone please explain to me what an Aussie has to do regarding marrying a Thai lady in Thailand. Someone told me that in the old days you had to go to the Australian embassy but now you go to a government office to obtain the paperwork.

Also, the lady I am marrying is from Surin (we had the traditional Thai wedding ceremony at her family home) and we now live in Chiang Mai. Can we get married in Chiang Mai or do we have to do it in Bangkok.

Thanks,

Breville

You need a letter from your embassy affirming you are free to marry. It is your embassy that determines the requirements to issue the letter, so look on their website.

Once you have the letter, you need to have it translated and present it to the Thai foreign office, consular section. They have to legalise the document. Now you are set to marry at any amphur in Thailand. Getting married in CM will be no problem.

When I married in Thailand, my embassy was most helpfull.

They had a complete list of what-to-do, and addresses of reliable translators.

I hope for you that the australian embassy is as helpfull.

That way you will not have to pay big amounts of money for some mediating scam company.

The prices that those companies quoted were rediculous, you can easily do everything yourself!
