The first public commemoration of the 2007 Buddhist monk-led protests known as the Saffron Revolution was held in Rangoon on Tuesday, attended by around 100 people, including dozens of monks. “In recent years, we couldn’t hold such a ceremony as we were in prison but we did pray for [the victims],†said the ceremony’s organizer, Agga Dammha, speaking to AFP. At least 31 people were killed when security forces cracked down on the protests, which at their peak saw tens of thousands of monks and their supporters take to the streets in an effort to bring down Burma’s then-ruling junta.
