PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least twelve people were killed Wednesday when a bomb ripped through a van in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the blast, saying it targeted an air force vehicle nearby.

The attack happened when a bomb exploded in a parked car near Scheme Chowk on Kohat road in the area of Badaber, located on the outskirts of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The bomb caused heavy damage to a van carrying civilians and damaged an Air Force van nearby.

Police said at least twelve civilians who were either in the van carrying civilians or walking nearby were killed, but none of them were in the van carrying officials from the Pakistan Air Force. At least 31 civilians were injured in the powerful explosion, which also damaged 10 nearby shops and a passenger bus.

A spokesman for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which is better known as the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack. He said the bomb attack targeted the Air Force van and was in revenge for both the killing of religious scholar Mualana Naseeb Khan and airstrikes carried out by the Pakistan Air Force.
