Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was present as a ship bound for Burma’s Arakan State set off on Tuesday, according to The Star, a Malaysian daily. The ship was carrying 500 tonnes of provisions for people displaced by communal clashes between Muslims and Buddhists earlier this year. Some 50 volunteers were also aboard for the voyage, which is expected to take around five days. “We hope that through this effort, the world will realize that Malaysia is a caring country,†Yassin said of the more than US $3.2 million in aid collected by a local country club.
