Burmese President Thein Sein said that opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi could succeed him if she is elected as president in 2015. In an interview with the BBC, Thein Sein insisted that the will of the people will be respected no matter who they chose, despite constitutional provisions that ban anyone with foreign family ties from becoming head of state. Suu Kyi, who is the widow of the late British academic Michael Aris, has two sons who are UK citizens. He added, however, that the military will continue to play a key role in Burmese politics.
