Unpaid debt blamed for gun and arson attack on East Pattaya home

gun-6.jpg

PATTAYA:--The house of a guarantor for a loan, yet to be paid back, was attacked with army-issue weapons in the early hours of Saturday and a truck parked outside the house was set on fire.

The incident occurred at a house within the Tatawan Village just off Soi Siam Country Club and Police made their way to the scene just before 3am following reports of multiple gun shots and a vehicle fire. Officers arrived and noticed nails on the road, which is a common tactic used to prevent Police or members of the public from following assailants as they make their escape from a crime scene.

Police met with the owner of the house, Khun Niem aged 78, who was very quick to offer Police an explanation. He revealed how his Sister, who has now lost contact with the rest of her family, took out a loan of 6 Million Baht 5 years ago with her Cousin, who is currently serving in the Thai army. Khun Niem acted as guarantor and when the debt was not paid back, the cousin confronted Khun Niem and demanded he pay back the loan as he accepted the responsibility of being the guarantor by co-signing for the loan.

A number of angry confrontations took place over the years and on 15th September Khun Niem was warned that time had run out and they were making plans to destroy his assets including his car and house. In a last minute negotiation, the lenders tried to take possession of a pick-up parked outside of the house, owned by Khun Niem’s Son-in-Law, but they were told they could not have the vehicle. During the early morning attack, which was captured on CCTV,

Multi Million Baht Bad Debt results in home shooting

f.jpg

Pattaya: Emergency services were called to a private home during the night, to find a burning vehicle

The pickup truck had been set fire to in an act of revenge, as the home owner had been repeatedly terrorised over a debt owed by his daughter.

The daughter is said to have borrowed several million baht from a distant relative, and then disappeared without trace, leaving the debt unpaid and a furious cousin. The cousin had demanded that her father, in his 70s, pay the debt on her behalf, but of course he couldn’t, as he has no great source of income. Debt collectors had put pressure on the man over recent months and he had tried to pay a little, but not enough to satisfy them.

They had demanded the documents and keys to a truck, parked outside the home, which they would take as a part payment of the debt, however since the truck didn’t belong to the home owner, he refused.

A never-ending stream of Soprano wannabees who believe they can act with impunity. The BiB need to pull their finger out and get these thugs off the streets.

The judicial system also needs to do something to increase the current lack of faith in it. Who cares if the jails are already full. Keep packing them in there and make something of a deterrent of the whole system!

I wonder where from the relative got the money for the loan in the first place rolleyes.gif

you don't think there is any Thais with more than a few thousand baht?

6 million Baht. That was the loan...not a few thousand baht ..and yes there are many with this amount of spare change. But many more without it.

6 million= $196 thousand

Though the actions of those trying to collect on the debt are well out of order and they need catching and punishing it needs to be remembered that this guy has guaranteed a loan and therefore has a responsibility to repay - there is an assumption that he does not have the ability to pay but surely to have been accepted as a guarantor in the first place he must have had something.

UPDATE

Police close-in on East Pattaya Gun and arson attack suspects

PATTAYA:--An urgent meeting was convened at Banglamung Police Station on Sunday Morning to discuss the shooting and arson attack on a house owned by a 78 year old man on Saturday Morning.

The entire incident was caught on CCTV cameras installed at the house of Khun Niem, who acted as guarantor for a 6 million Baht loan for his Sister. The loan was issued by Khun Niem’s nephew, a member of the Thai Army, who was unable to recover the debt from the Sister who went missing. He then attempted to recover the debt from Khun Niem, the Guarantor, who refused to pay back the money.

Senior Provincial Police Investigators have taken over the case, led by Police Colonel Supatee, Deputy Provincial Police Commander, and after a closed-door meeting it was confirmed that the two suspects involved in the attack on Khun Niem’s house are now known and arrest warrants have been issued for them but their names will not be released until they have been found.

Well the bottom line is, don't lend large ammounts of money to family or friends. Most of the time it comes out bad.

Wonder how a low paid military guy had so much dosh to lend. ermm.gif

I think the military guy lent the cash, but it was guarenteed by someone else to be paid back, according to this extract from the original post.

"The house of a guarantor for a loan, yet to be paid back, was attacked with army-issue weapons in the early hours of Saturday and a truck parked outside the house was set on fire."
