I am about to start a new job in Nigeria where accommodation is provided. My unmarried partner and daughter live in Udon Thani. Can I send / import all my household goods to Udon Thani with no problem or is there a problem? It is all used household items. I am not yet planning to retire yet. Can anyone please advise

you dont say from where you want to send them.from a personel experiance never mind if they are 50years old be prepared for agents fees [not customs] this end. reading simular stories i think we got away with being scamed for 13,000bht for 3 cubic mts.sent from the uk,and they were my wfs personel belongings.

I guess that I was lucky in sending my personal belongings by sea. I flew out and bought cheap but appropriate clothes from street markets to wear until my wordly goods arrived. I was asked for 1000 baht by the BKK agents and when I explained that I had paid in the UK and showed the receipts I was told that Customs would not clear the container, presumably shared with others, free of charge. Faced with the prospect of inconveniencing others as well as myself I paid.

I'm thinking of doing this in the next month or so and a container by sea would be fine for me (no hurry). Nothing valuable just personal bits and bobs - all used and of no value to anyone else (I imagine).

Can you re-collect how much the shipping cost ? I reckon I need about half of a 'normal' sized continer.

Thanks.

sent all mine in a shipping container (20ft) and it cost me $7000 Aus . that was from door to door , and everything was packed for me in Aus and unpacked in Thailand , That was all the cost . I had a large household of furniture.

How would people rate the cost of new household furnishings in Thailand compared to the West? I was planning on getting rid of all of it in the US and replacing it with new in Thailand. I was planning on bringing a carry-on with my laptop, leaving a hard disk which would be a clone of my laptop with a friend in the US "just in case," and then bringing and paying for two suitcases which would carry everything I need. I've scanned all old photos to disc and ditched the paper.

Since I'll no doubt be in a furnished condo for a while, and don't want to be loaded down with furniture while I find the place I'll settle, it seems to be an advantage to just buy new.

What are furnishing costs like in LOS?

we had 3yrs before we actually moved, with visiting to where we where going to live and pricing every thing we found what they class as luxury goods its what we use every day expensive.stainless steel pans, kitchen tools, china, plates, cups, good drinking glasses, bed linen, but furniture from inderpendant retailers compared to the uk.is very good, bedroom, beds, and bed furniture we had a lot from winner, most of the big stores always seem to have something on promotion.so unless you have collected some expensive items i would not bother sending anything, get what you can in your suitcases, just bring what you need in the way of clothes as they are dirt cheap, what most thai's use at meal times eg.melamine is cheap.what air line are you traveling with?we found thai very good for overweight luggage never charged us once.good luck.
