I have a simple question. I got my first 'marriage visa' about 2 months ago and need to make a trip to Chaeng Wattana to extend it. My wife read from a Thai forum that you have to apply so that you have at least 30 days left to stay in the country. This sounds fishy to me and I've never seen it anywhere else. Normally during extensions they tell you to go within the last 7 days or so.

Can someone please confirm this. Is there any limit to how many days I have to have left? Or I can just go during the last week?

Assuming you now have a Non Imm O Visa you can apply for the extension any time within the final 30 days of your current permision to stay.

The earlier the better in case of problems.

Just what I needed to know. Thanks a lot.

I am going for my first extension application today. I phoned about a month ago and he told me to call again about 15 days before expiry of my 'O' Visa. He can give me up to 45 days temporary extension if there are any problems.

We were told not to bother with fotos of the house with house number, the guy I talked to yesterday told me he needed that too. Took some last night, have to go to a foto shop today, and we don't have a readable house number....

Everyone should have a readable house number. Has it been removed or destroyed It does not have to be in any set format so you could easily paint it on or buy decal. It is a normal required photo so without you may need a witness to confirm address (if they will not accept the wife).

You will have a 30 day under consideration stamp that starts on the date your extension begins which will be when your current permit to stay ends. Going 15 days early would give you a total of 45 days wait.

It's bizarre, I too had a paper reminder in my passport from Chaeng Wattana as below which CLEARLY says AT LEAST 30 days, so I went 32 days before expirey and of course I was wrong, they said come back WITHIN 30 days. Go figure.

I just got back from emigration after three hours in there (first application). All looked fine until they asked for a copy of my confirmation of ability to marry. dam_n it, you have the marriage certificate on the table in front of you, proof that I must have shown this document at the Amphur when I got married. So this is a document that is not listed anywhere as necessary... we 'found a way around it'.... I was very polite, honest. I have to go back to the Amphur to get a certified copy, if they lost it then I go to the police and get a paper certifying that it is lost. More tea money I guess.

Interesting was the fact that one of the pen pushers asked an elderly Englishman also present how old he was. He didn't look too good, was there for a 90 day stamp. On his responding '87', the guy told him that he can get a policeman to come to his home to certify that he actually lives there (which is what the 90 days reporting is about).

If one goes in the last 30 days of permission to stay, how does the money in the bank thing work out.

For instance, if permission to stay ends December 15, you have the cash in bank by October 15, two months before, but it shows not been there for two months if you go early.?

Yes sir, we actually took the sign with us to show them to prove that it was unreadable. Livened things up a bit. No problems as far as that is concerned.

MOoey must be in the bank for the required time on the date when you apply for the extension.
