There isn't a single thing in Singapore which is cheaper than what it costs in Thailand. electronics stuff and parts (gaming consoles, hdd, rams) are cheaper in singapore. pantex cameras, lenses are cheaper in singapore. fenders, gibsons, marshall amps and a whole lot of musical stuff are cheaper in singapore. some imported big bikes are cheaper in singapore. my ducati 916 only cost 7k sgd used. not alot but there some things more expensive here, mostly imports. i think internet and calls are cheaper in singapore as well, not too certain about that. You want to live like a Thai in Thailand, it becomes one of the cheapest places in the world to live. I live well here on a crappy Canadian pension, I wouldn't even be able to pay rent on a 2 room apartment in Toronto let alone eat. Perhaps you are confusing the word "Thai" when what you really mean is "peasant", and the word "farang" for "anyone with standards". If your goal in life is to live as cheap as possible then yes, living like a peasant in cockroach ridden 2000 baht per month studio room, riding on 10 baht buses and eating 30 baht noodles means that Thailand still is cheaper than western countries. However, for most people (including most thais) who aspire to better living standards and have their own car, nice home, their own spending on discretionary items, then Thailand is likely just as expensive or even more expensive than western countries. I have a large room with balcony in a thai guesthouse, clean, safe, with fridge and tv for 4000B a month. There's no way I can live that cheaply, eating delicious thai food two meals a day, in a western country. And our food supply is considered toxic to Europeans, even the USA for beef. I think most if not all Western countries have their share of junkies now. I also think they tend to run higher on the HIV scale from sharing needles? Wasn't the beef issue about mad cow disease, or am I thinking of something else? I seem to recall some US herds having to be destroyed because some Canadian animals had been imported with that disease? ?? If so, I don't see that as Canada's fault because who knows how that disease got into Canada. The US has just been lucky enough to catch it early and destroy the whole herd. Was that it? I see things like the drug and homeless issues as being evidence of a general moral decline in the West. Maybe I'm wrong, be we all had a major financial Great Depression in the 1930's before there were any safety nets at all. Yet the folks plodded through without resorting to heavy drug use or crime and all of that. That's all a more recent happening and it seemed to start in the 1960's with the Hippy deal. ?? That coincided with President Johnson's Great Society which ushered in welfare and food stamps and other safety nets. Now 47% of all Americans receive some kind of government assistance!!!! "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." No wonder we have huge deficits in spite of high taxes. I just described an accounting "switch" in another thread, but the gist is that an error in one direction can double your problem. In short, if you don't make someone work, you won't have his income from taxes. Lets say that would be $500 a month. Instead, you give him $500 to live on, and you're short $1,000. Yep, think about it. I think the problems is the corporations took ove the west, the Bankers have made trilions of fake money causing inflations, the companies have outsourced to China, the enviroment is degraded... slavery started long ago in the USA and still alive in other forms today. The drugs came from the USA Army durning the unjust attack on Vietnamn... It goes on and on, but one thing is for sure, tens of millions of Americans live without any health care, nowwhere else in the west does that happen. Hmm based on recent observations, I'd say most of those things you mentioned (other than the Ducati) cost about the same, with maybe a variance of a few dollars. Tatsujin Posted October 21, 2012 Share Posted October 21, 2012 As far as I am concerned, pretty much everything here in Thailand is far more expensive than 'back home', including cars, food/eating out, movies, drinks, hotel rooms etc etc. With food and drink, it does depend 'where' you are buying them of course.
