webfact Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 DEET did not kill Canadian Sisters By Staff Reporter KRABI: -- In June this year, two Canadian sisters Noémi Bélanger, (25), and Audrey Bélanger, (20) travelled to Thailand and to a resort on Phi Phi Island. After a night out on the beaches, the two girls were not seen again until a hotel maid used her pass key to access their room and found them both dead. Thai authorities took the matter quickly into hand and, working together with the Canadian Embassy, investigated the deaths thoroughly and completed a series of forensic exams to establish the cause of death before the sisters were returned to their homeland. At that time and subsequently, authorities have honoured the reported wishes of both the Canadian Embassy and the family of the deceased by not revealing the contents of their reports. However a pair of “keen” Canadian reporters claimed to have gained unique access to the reports and went on to report that the girls had been killed asa result of ingesting DEET, a chemical compound usually applied to the skin to dissuade Mosquitoes from biting. The story made world headlines despite Local reports that any information the journalists might have gained could well have been misinterpreted in translation . Even when eminent toxicologists pointed out that the amount a person would have to digest for them to die from Deet poisoning was massive, they were sidelined. Now Canadian Pathologists have confirmed, in a coroner’s report, that the levels of Deet, a pesticide,, found in the bodies of two dead sisters was NOT the cause of their death. laurentbkk Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 I am pretty sure that we will never know the truth . That's too bad for Thailand image . 2
wcoast Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 The mystery remains.. at least we can rule out DEET consumption, which in my mind was a drink only a fool would order. Very curious about our Canadian autopsy results.
catweazle Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 (edited) This is no good news for Thailand's image, even though a similar incident in the western world would hardly make the news at all. Sad to read that the solution (as is closure for the girls' parents) is still hanging in mid air. I hope for the girls, their parents, anyone wrongfully accused, and our beloved Thailand that this case will be solved soon. We don't really need more of this... Edited October 11, 2012 by catweazle
Katipo Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 I hope the Canadian authorities can provide answers that those in Thailand could not. The fact that there is some progress will hopefully be providing some comfort to the families of the deceased during a time of unimaginable pain.

Very curious about our Canadian autopsy results. Can we rule out DEET? Remember the girls was found in their room with a large amount of vomit and blood around them. When a person get poisoned the body will try to get rid of the poisoning, so before the sisters started vomiting they may indeed have a large amount of DEET inside their bodies! 3
Popular Post davejones Posted October 11, 2012 Popular Post Posted October 11, 2012 Corrupt police, incompetent reporters = no justice for the 2 girls. RIP It's the family that want the cause of death kept secret, not the police. What exactly do you want the police to do if this was an accidental death? 6
Popular Post davejones Posted October 11, 2012 Popular Post Posted October 11, 2012 I am pretty sure that we will never know the truth . That's too bad for Thailand image . It doesn't reflect badly on Thailand's image at all. I bet most people aren't even aware of this. Things like this don't get reported worldwide. I don't see what you think Thailand has done wrong. They investigated the deaths and found that there was no crime. The family want the cause of death kept secret. End of case. 4
Popular Post HUAHIN62 Posted October 11, 2012 Popular Post Posted October 11, 2012 Sorry this does only bad on Thailand for those who don't know the whole story. THE PARENTS REQUESTED THE AUTOPCY REPORTS NOT TO BE RELEASED. The Thai police honoured the request by the parents and added that if the family or embassy want to release further info they can. Untill now they haven't released any further info. The ones who are hiding info is the parents and everyone must just let it go. Let the parents grieve their childrens deaths with their image/reputation intact. Why do everyone want to know the truth if the truth will only hurt the family more? Why are people dishonouring the wishes of the family by snooping around and seek publicity? The parents have lost that was most dear to them and the only thing they have left are the memories of their children, why do people want to destroy this? 10

But if the DEET was inside their bodies, the vomiting would have got it out. The remaining DEET wouldn't have been enough to kill them. This has already been noted, so not sure why you're still banging on about it. 5

Posters on here, and others, should respect their privacy. Are the lives of TV posters so sad that they have to dig into private issues? Get over it and leave the family alone. 3
alfalfa19 Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 3 words: NO SHI*T, SHERLOCK!!!!! I guess now they must go back to the ibuprofen theory.

The family want the cause of death kept secret. End of case. It was certainly well covered in the press here in Hong Kong, and was front page news in some of the UK newspapers. I am not quite sure where you get the idea that it was not reported worldwide. There has been a spate of deaths of Chinese tourists in Phuket recenly, each one of these has also been fully discussed in the local press and on the bulletin boards. Thailand's image is taking a real pasting.
clockman Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Same story as Down Town Inn, Chiang Mai. No closure for victims!
WyattEarp Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Why does anyone care what component of that concoction killed them? In my experience the ignorance is so deep here that they'll try sulphuric acid just to see what happens.
GarryBenton Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 That's no story. They also didn't drown. Who cares what DIDN'T lead to their deaths? The question is...what did. Why print a story that tells nothing at all? That's news? They also weren't attacked by white sharks! What a story!
asiawatcher Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 If the cause is not obvious, B.i.B. just seem to sweep it aside with any excuse. Nothing changes in Thailand lazy police (probably untrained) and sloppy police work. But is that their fault? Question is, what will the Canadian investigators do about it and what are their options?
jaapfries Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 I am pretty sure that we will never know the truth . That's too bad for Thailand image . In my humble opinion; how hard would it have been to trace & track those two Brazilian chaps who were last seen partying with these 2 sisters. My goodness; we have fairly sophisticated digital info. systems here in Thailand at airports & via Immigration. These boys could possibly give some pretty accurate information as to what transpired there during the party, not to mention any food ingested by the girls (puffer-fish etc. ?). There must be many pictures among which those two boys-from-Brazil must surely feature ?!?! Some very basic but thorough detective work would have been able to clear-up this “mystery” a long time ago . . . . . . It must be horrific for the parents - I sympathize and wish them all the strength they need ! Read more: http://www.pattaya103.com/deet-did-not-kill-canadian-sisters/#ixzz28xNJpzBM 2

Your high school biology teacher gets a failing grade. They could have vomited up their entire digestive tracts and it would not affect the amount of toxin already absorbed into their bloodstream. 4

RIP It's the family that want the cause of death kept secret, not the police. What exactly do you want the police to do if this was an accidental death? What makes you say it was an ''accidental death''. Go back and read the initial reports on the state of the hotel room when they found the girls. The circumstances of this tragedy are very suspicious....

I also agree that TV members needn't snoop around looking for more. Their parents have requested no more be made public, and there is a good reason for that. They don't want their daughters' images spoiled, so let's respect that. 1
cdnski12 Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Not Thai info. Stupid Canuck Reporters (probably suffering from Hockey Concussion Syndrome) put in a phoney news report, after many beers & girls. Why would their Editor would allow such sloppy reporting? Probably all were high on Yabba?

Popular Post grantbkk Posted October 11, 2012 Popular Post Posted October 11, 2012 People that come to developing countries well and truly on their own. We all travel at our own risk and only a few of us will be able to rely on local officials and diplomatic staff for assistance unless we get into deep trouble. At least Thailand has first class medical facilities in some of the urban areas. Most of us know the dangers and some of us take precautions. I know expats living here that actually think this is the safest place in the world. This is far from the truth of course. They have yet to fall victim and tend to bury their heads in the sand in total denial. This condition is exacerbated by the controlled press who are encouraged not to report crime and other incidents that would cast the Kingdom in unfavorable light and/or have a negative impact on tourism. I lived in Pattaya in 2002 when the Prime Minister advised the press not to continually report suicide death for fear that tourism would be affected. The "Pattaya Plunge" was a popular form of suicide and homicide at the time. The local government even advised us to be careful walking by tall condos and hotels because of all the falling bodies. Nothing really has changed in the last 10 years. 4
dalpha Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 It would be nice to know what substance it was that caused the death, just to know what poison to stay clear of.
Popular Post Nonja Posted October 11, 2012 Popular Post Posted October 11, 2012 In the case of death I would have thought that Coroner's Courts would have made a ruling which was public. I thought that was the point of Coroner's Courts: to try to prevent the same sort of fatality happening again. So this is not a question of keeping the matter a private family matter, or saving face: it's a question of public health. I am not aware of any Coronial judgements in advanced democratic countries which are kept private to protect the victim's reputation. I may well be wrong. In any case, it is a waste of public resources not to release information which may be useful in order to prevent the same fatality from happening again. 3
pacovl46 Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 They should check for Laburnum. All parts of the plant are poisonous and it's notoriously hard to detect, if I remember correctly. An acute poisoning can be lethal and cause vomiting and severe diarrhea. There's two species in that family, but both are native to Europe. There's a third species, the one in Asia, that some people count to the Laburnum family, others don't. It is poisonous, too, and it's quite common in Asia and goes by the common names "Golden Shower" or "Golden-Chain Tree".
