As I understand it, a non EU national who has permanent residence in an EU country as the spouse/partner/family member of an EU national does not need a visa to travel to other EU countries; which of course would include the Schengen states, provided they are traveling with or to join their EU national spouse/partner/family member.

However, ILR is not permanent; it's indefinite and can lapse if the holder spends a continuous period of two or more years outside the UK or otherwise is no longer a UK resident.

I have heard of situations where a UK ILR holder traveling to another EU state has been refused boarding by airlines or entry by immigration officials because they did not have a visa for that state, even though they were traveling with their EU national spouse/partner/family member.

So my advice would be to obtain a Schengen visa; particularly as they are, or should be, quick and easy to obtain and free.

Of course, if, once qualified, the person becomes naturalised as British and obtains a British passport then they have the same rights to travel within the EU as any other British citizen.

You will find out that your wife can do a postal application but the kids will have to attend a VFS centre in the UK.

I was going to do the same but decided to wait for the citizenship and British passport.

It would have been a 200 mile round trip to Manchester for us just to submit the kids application. If you are near to one it's not too bad.

If your kids have British Passports then they can travel to Paris on those, they wouldn't need to go to VFS.

VFS do not handle visa applications for the French in the UK; TLS do.

How and where to apply for a visa?

TLS Contact

In order to improve the standard of service offered to visas applicants, the French Authorities have outsourced the visa application process (from general visa information to receipt and return of the documents) to TLScontact. This service is available to all regardless of nationality, type of passport, duration and purpose of stay in France.

Be aware that, due to the introduction of biometric visas, all applicants, except children under the age of 12 and Heads of States and their spouses, must apply in person.

Unless you live in Scotland or the Isle of Man, in which case you apply to the French consulate in Edinburgh.
