The Nation's Tv News

Feb 3rd 8:40 PM broadcast.

1- The broadcast started off, 5 minutes late, with something about budget for healthcare. 2 minutes

2- Then on with Biz News, stock market etc. all rosy... 5 minutes

3- Out and About, some Swiss guy who flies a balloon in Pattaya. 3 minutes

8:50 pm... end of a shortened news broadcast which usually lasts until 9 pm and?

NOT A WORD ABOUT THE PROTEST TOMORROW or the latest resignation from the minister of culture...

Has the Nation been gagged or is it self-imposed silence?

Thanks for the info. penzman.

In contrast, today's Nation is chock-a-block with coverage and commentary of tomorrow's planned protest rally.

Very strange....and extremely suspicious!

As I mentioned on an earlier post on Thaivisa, this government is pulling out all the stops to prevent people from attending this rally. Ignorance is bliss....which is just what the government wants now.

We shouldn't forget that television in Thailand is almost the exclusive domain of the government. Television viewers, here, get to see and hear almost exactly what the government intends them to see, hear.....and think!

This is absolutely incredible!

The front pages of both The Nation and The Bangkok Post are dominated by tomorrow's rally and the crisis facing Thaksin. There are no other stories, that relate to other subjects, on their front pages. Also several of their inside pages (pages two, three and four - internal and domestic news pages carry extensive coverage of the precarious political situation now.)

BUT NOT A MENTION ON TV......? And The Nation's own broadcast network.

Incredible......unbelievable.......amazing (Thailand).......CENSORSHIP.......CENSORSHIP......CENSORSHIP.......

Probably accounts for why the broadcact ran five minutes late.....

"Long live the dictatorship!!!!!"

Watched the same broadcast... Not sure what was up when 5 minutes into it, they go to business news... and the entire program lasted maybe 17 minutes...

very strange... they certainly aren't one to censor themselves normally.

but then, often things are kinda haphazard on any tv program on any channel here. It might have been due to nothing more than the staff being too involved in the newspaper reporting to devote due time to the tv news.

That may not be it, but it's about the only thing I could make sense of.

there's a lot of times when they've not run the full 30 minutes or start late... particularly a year and a half to two years ago... but lately they had been pretty much filling the entire time slot.

After looking at how many articles about todays rally on their online version of the newspaper... I'm inclined even further to think that their english-language news program simply took a back seat to their newspaper in terms of staff resources... (not too surprising as it's happened before during big events)..

Anyway, Penz.... there's reams of stuff to read on their site.... :o

If the Nation can make it look like they are being gagged then it is in their own interest to do so. Politics is filled with sneaky tricks to mislead people and to create illusions.

You may be right, but it is possible that the government started to interfere with the nation-wide TV signals so no one knows what is happening out there.

For a major story, there really is very little on the TV-news, and most of that is pro-DL.

Let's hope there are cameras at the rally, media or otherwise, who can show the real culprits, of any violence which might occur.

Although with the usual illegal cuts on satellite-feeds, VCD-sales, power-supplies to Sondhi's meeting, etcetera - who needs Censorship as well ?

Rally day today.

ITV broadcasting images of Sondhi's pre-rally and even last night's speech he gave in front of his staff. :D

Thaksin must be chewing on toenails. :o

ASTV is of course on it non-stop since this morning with many guests one after an other.

I can definitely say that they did a much better job of reporting the event on the following day.

Still puzzled about their silence on Friday evening... at least. a warning to foreigners that it may be a good idea to stay away as some embassies did.
