This is the Official website, right? http://www.railway.co.th/home/Default.asp?lenguage=Eng In the Check Timetables and Fares, when Origin > BKK and Destination > Surat Thani is Clicked, this is the Result > http://www.railway.co.th/checktime/checktime.asp?lenguage=Eng

While it shows the first train at 1300, I'm sure there was another button I pushed that showed an 8:00 am Departure to Surat Thani. and another website [man in seat 61] shows an early morning train, too.

Is there an early morning train, BKK to Surat Thani?

ok, I found that other Link,,, 2 ads below Check Timetables and Fares, there's another Link labelled [Timetable]. Upon Clicking [souther Line] it still shows Train 171, but there is, now, train #43, too. [it's hard to know which Timetable is the Official one? why they would differ....

Train #43 offers 2nd Class only. You could save yourself a lot of grief by downloading Dave Bernstein's excellent guide to Thai railways

Thnks Raj, you've filled me in with what I need to Mr. Bernstein's site would lead to same question.

as on Page 82. [special Express Long distance trains operating on expedited schedules with first and second class air conditioned sleeping

cars and restaurant cars. Meals must be purchased and may be consumed at seat or in the restaurant car.

These trains are powered by diesel locomotives and operate at maximum speed of 105 kilometers per hour

(65 miles per hour).] #43 is listed as Special Express . also, this would lead one to believe it has a 1rst class Coach.

On the official Timetables #83 & #85 are listed only as [Express] but on another page they are listed as having 1rst Class.

< these are are the options that for us, methinks?

If anybody hits this Thread on a Search for train ticketing train schedules, I'll tell you what made it easy for me, which I found in the Pages of Dave B. as suggested by Rajy above. Reading his Site and the Official railway.co.th, sure, but the easiest, for me, it turned out was getting to http://www.thairailticket.com/esrt/Default.aspx?language=1 and Signing up. [you will need your PP # or Thai ID #,plus your Credit Card info, handy] *? if there is a Link from the main Scheduling Page, I can't find it?*

Now, simply, Select the Destinations and the Dates. You'll get the easiest to read List of Train #'s and Times for those dates. Even if you didn't learn, from the two Sites, Above, what trains are 1rst, 2nd, 3rd Class, you can, quickly, look at the Options and use the Back Button to compare with other Train #'s.

Thairailticket is the only one I Bookmarked.

Oh,,, another thing, The 1rst and 2nd Class Berths sell out pretty fast, when the 60 Day booking window opens up. If you want a sleeping Berth, book early.
