In the wake of warnings issued from embassies up to the Sondthi demo and the recent travel warnings to Danes in Thailand. I would like your opinion on your respective embassy services in Thailand.

Homepage, travel warnings, up to date, citizen service and so on.

I will start with the Danish Embassy

I don’t really know what they are doing.

Oh yes! I have been in contact with them when I wanted to open a business here in Thailand. The meeting lasted only 20 minutes and was interrupted by our self, when the consular stated that it was a bad idea to open any IT business in Thailand, since the Thais lacked on all skills, could not sit still for more than 15 minutes and could only work with something clearly instructed… Instead he recommended China…

We then told him it wasn’t our first time here, and that we didn’t came to hear insults regarding Thais, but wanted to borrow office space in the embassy for business meeting….but the last 20 minutes has showed us it clearly wasn’t a good idea to use the embassy.

When the Tsunami hit, the Danish embassy was one of the last one to arrive. They didn’t even go to the Town hall where everyone else where present. They went to a hairstyle shop and started to setup internet communication. Several Danes would walk to the Town Hall where other embassies where…only to find out that the Danes where not present.

No info, not even the news of the big Sondthi demo was shown on the Danish embassy homepage. It was on the UK embassy, the US, Australia and Norway. The latest post on the Danish embassy homepage regarding travel warnings are about Bird flue and that the embassy is closed on Monday due to special circumstances.

So what is the Norwegian one like? Or the one from Burkino Farso? Or other views on the Danish embassy?

Why use the Danish Embassy for advice to set up business in Thailand, are you a Dane ?

Why use the Danish Embassy for advice to set up business in Thailand, are you a Dane ?

Kind of a direct question in times like these :o

But yes, you have blown my cover…

Actually we where two Danish investors who wanted to use the service from the Danish embassy. We…as in our company wanted to hear if it was possible to use the embassy to have meetings with potential Thai partners.

We didn’t tell that some of us knew quit a lot about Thailand having done business here back in 1997. The other investor had never been to Thailand before and knew very little about it, but was keen on investing in the Telecom industry here.

As I mentioned but in a nice way in the first post, we got pissed from the speech about Thais failing in almost every fact of life, other than simple small things.

And even the second investor felt the same and left the meeting with us feeling the bad vibes in the air.

Now as far as I know the other investor hasn’t invested in Thailand….maybe they have gone to China as the embassy recommended.

We have however invested and opened our business here. And of course they Thai guys and girls we have hired proved that the Danish embassy was wrong.

Just think if it was the other way around. Some Thai business people would come to the Thai Royal Embassy in Copenhagen and was told...No, the Danes a lazy people (I am only using this example because sonthaya dont like to be called lazy :D ) You should instead go to Sweden to setup your business.

Now I am sorry…truly that I only have negative stories about the…our embassy.

But since 1997 I have only dealt with them on these 3 occasions I have mentioned, so I can’t really say anything polite…other than it is a very nice house they stay in.

But by making this post I was hopping that other nationalities or even other Danes could bring some positive stories or even second me on my opinion.

Danish TV2 aired a documentary some years ago. The question in that documentary was "what do they do in our embassies?" The outcome was that they did newspaper clippings…cutting out stories of interest for Danish business….well!

In the aftermath of the Tsunami the Danish embassy was criticized heavily along with the foreign ministry in Denmark. An investigation was called…but sadly it was the foreign ministry itself that did the investigation. The outcome was a report and a guide to disaster (I delivered some info to the second one) and a general kick in the butt to sharpen up. Now I don’t see the last thing has helped a lot. As discussed in another thread up to the Sondhi Rally a lot of embassies warned their people to stay away from large crowds. Luckily it was a peaceful demonstration.

Where are you going with this Oishi? What is your point?

"I would like your opinion on your respective embassy services in Thailand.

The reason for this is I surfed on some of the other embassies homepages and found the Norwegian one to be very up to date and very informative. Was almost jaloux...almost.

It might also share a light on what people use their embassy for...do they go there and get more pages in there passports and was it a quick service. Or have other used their embassy as I did and gotten a lot of valued information.

I saw the post up to the Sondhi Rally and laughed when their was a post on the Austrian embassy sitting and drinking in Patpong. In my confused mind, and embassy should service the people of both nations...like those who would want to have a visa to visit Denmark and service the ones who lives here, want to open a business or are on vaccation.

Others might say...Nope! I have stayed here for 30 years and never even been to the embassy.

Some might go their every weekend to party with other expats...

I am not on official businees doing a report if that is what worries you :o
