Irishman found floating face-down in his Swimming Pool at South Pattaya Estate

PATTATA:--An Irish National was found dead in his swimming pool on Wednesday afternoon. Police were alerted by staff from a Pool Cleaning Company who had gone to the house of Mr. Sean Muire Burgess aged 58 from the Republic of Ireland, located at the Golden Mountain Villa 2 Estate in Soi 5 off the Pratamnuk Road in South Pattaya just after 5pm.

Lying face-down in the center of the private swimming pool was the naked body of Mr. Burgess who is thought to have died no more than 3 hours prior to the discovery, by workers from the Mr. Pool Service Company. No obvious signs of injury were seen during an initial inspection of the body and nothing inside the house or around the pool area suggested foul play.

If you were swimming alone in your own private pool would you bother wearing trunks? I wouldn't.

(The advisability of swimming or climbing ladders if there no one else around is another matter. Personally I wouldn't do either under any circumstances.)

I also have a pool and no neighbours and often swim and wander round the place naked. One of the joys of owning a place with no neighbours and its hot. If there was no sign of a struggle and there has been no mention of any women then my guess is heart attack.

R.I.P to a fellow Irishman, Have to say that we often swim naked as our nearest neighbour is some 150 metres away and due to the position of our property only the monkeys in the jungle can see us and maybe those in the odd aircraft that fly by on occassions. We all have to go at some time I just hope it is when I am having my wicked way !!!!!!!!

Try as I might, I can't even imagine a thai putting forth the energy to quickly remove a farang body from the water and try to resesitate

No I certainly haven't. However there are the Sawangburibon (sorry don't know how to spell it) Many young Thai do a one year stint in that service as volunteers to earn merit. I wonder if they are CPR trained?

You are spot on. Around our villages in Isaan are three farangs that are two weeks in Pattaya and the other two weeks here in Sakon Nakhon. They behave here in Isaan as if they are still in Pattaya.

Why would you suspect foul play when from the initial inspection of the gentleman's body there were no obvious signs of injury to be seen, and nothing inside the house or around the pool area suggested foul play?

Also a friend of the deceased has already mentioned that he'd had a bad time with his health in recent years.

Well actually yes I would and do. If I am swimming for exercise reasons, it just seems more comfortable.

There is always the possibility of the doorbell ringing, or the pool service people arriving.

We are actually mostly normal people here in Pattaya.

I am no pathologist, either, but since they estimated his death as more than 3 hours prior, my guess would be that you would NOT want to go anywhere near his body, much less his mouth. Also, my firefighter/paramedic friend always jokes about how CPR is just something to keep people busy while waiting for the professionals to arrive, as its effectiveness is not great, and often times, people do more harm than good since they do not perform it correctly, even if they have been 'trained'.

Here is a story for you...

A few Years ago i was on holiday with my father in HUA HIN sitting on the beach

We saw a body floating in the sea quite far out in front of us, directly in front of the Hilton hotel

A young Thai boy dashed out into the waves and amazingly carried this huge Farang out of the water, The guy must have been at least 100kg and the Thai probably half that. But get this....

The Thai did not only carry him out of the water but kept running with this huge white (turning blue) farang up the beach and then up the Hilton hua hin steps to the top.

It was so fast most people did not even notice it happening

(ofcourse a dead farang on the beach is bad for business - and this may have been one of the motives to hide the farang from beach sitters, or maybe the guy was just motivated by the urge to help - who knows!

Anyways, we dashed after them and got to the top steps of the hilton to find the Thai lifeguards and Thai Hilton staff surrounding the guy who had been dumped on the concrete on his back and very blue and i was convinced dead. The Thais not having a clue on what they should do were just looking down at him and making a fuss trying to look important, but no one dared to touch him.

The poor guy had a massive scar down the center of his chest so probably a recent bypass surgery, he had gone swimming and must have had a heart attack.

My father acted very fast and started shouting to the lifeguards 'You know CPR you want do for him, anyone want to do CPR?'

They all laughed and say 'No way' No thanks - No i don't want to touch his lips and it was suddenly a joke.

In the end my father jumped in and immediately did mouth to mouth and CPR, i think he even cracked a few of his ribs trying to bring him back.

Amazingly - after 5 minutes the guy who was blue and bloated coughed and came back, apparently he returned to the beach a week or two later to thank the little Thai guy that acted so fast to bring him back to shore. He lived - which is quite amazing, although we are not sure if he was brain damaged or not but there we go.

Yes, Thais dont have a clue about CPR, they also dont know how to deal with these situations and are usually more concerned about themselves, or their business being affected negatively by a dead farang on the beach. I was very angry after it and in shock that they really are wired that way...

But for those that say they dont know how to act - well the little Thai guy was still the hero of the day lifting him out of the waves and running with him over his shoulder up the beach and up the hilton steps was a site to see indeed.

Strong willed they are indeed - especially if they are going to lose face or business - If you want to motivate a Thai (face and Money) are the only way.

FYI.

Many thais who work in industry at Map Ta Phut, Laem Chabang, etc have regular and mandatory first aid and CPR training.

Not everyone in Thailand works in a bar.

We can not be certain of this, he could have been killed elsewhere, perhaps through poisoning, and in order to protect the assassin he was thrown into the swimming pool, as this would indicate a deathly accident in the swimming pool via heart attack, or a stroke.
