I am surprised nobody has mentioned my favourite which is

'Lawrence of Arabia' with Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif

followed by

'The Last Emperor'

'Blazing Saddles.'

for my birthday last month my son sent me a signed photograph of the stars of Blazing Saddles. It's now a treasured possession.

'The Rocky Horror Show' used to be on every year as a stage production in my home town of Nottingham and I went four years in a row. Not once dressed up. I'm afraid I don't have the legs for stockings. But the effort many of the audience went to to dress up as various characters was amazing. Many in the audience carried torches for the light scene when they stopped them using lighters. I now have the DVD (courtesy of a company in Pattaya who stock it) but it's not as much fun as the stage show with audience participation.

Agree on Grosse Pointe Blank

in addition:

Dr. Strangelove (get more out of movie each time I watch it)

Heathers (Winona Ryder and Christian Slater)

New Jack City (this made Wesley Snipes and you can see Chris Rock in dramatic role)

Hard Times (Charles Bronson as bare knuckle boxer)

Lost Boys (already mentioned)

Tampopo (Japanese Noodle movie)

Virtuosity (Denzel and early Russell Crowe)

Quigley Down Under (not a great movie, but I like it)

Silverado (Great Cast)

Lethal Weapon (Only number 1, when Riggs was crazy)

Love Actually (How about that for sentimentality, Bill Nighy hilarious and I'm not British)

Near Dark (vampire movie made by supporting cast of Aliens, right after Aliens)

I'm Gonna Get You Sucka (Keenan Ivory Wayans satire of Blacksploitation movies--wild cast)

The Crow (lask Flick of Brandon Lee, now you know where all the Thai 'pii' get their whiteface)

Any movie with Michelle Yeoh, especially like the Heroic Trio and the Executioners.

Enough for now.

Ah Alien. On my tenth birthday, my dad foolishly (but with good intentions) decided to rent one of those movie projectors. This was before video made it big in my home town. He asked the guy at the rental shop for a “Star Warsy” kind of movie. Obviously, the guy was clueless and picked Alien. So there we were, a bunch of 10-year olds - propped full of hot dogs and sugar - alone in a dark room with one of the scariest movies of all times playing in front of us. My dad knew something was amiss when child upon child started running out of our house, all the while crying hysterically. Incidentally, he had to spend the better part of the evening trying to explain to the parents calling that he had not seen the movie beforehand, and he had to swear it would never happen again.

Anyway, a movie I watch every year is Cinema Paradiso. A must for every film lover.

Somebody mentioned Man Bites Dog. Uh. What a shocker of a movie (but not one I would like to watch over and over…)

Also, I have always enjoyed Before Sunrise with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delphy. What chemistry. What dialogue. When I heard the sequel came out (Before Sunset), I was kind of wary, not wanting to spoil the first one. Then I caught it in UBC the other day, and it turned out the be even better than the original. The ending just blew me away.

I have to agree on Dr Strangelove, every time you see it you notice a lot of things you didn't see before... It's also hilarious! It shows the true talent of Peter Sellars.

Anyway, a movie I watch every year is Cinema Paradiso. A must for every film lover.

Cinema Paradiso, sheer class, a beautiful movie, everyone should see it, once again, better every time you see it!

Tampopo (Japanese Noodle movie)

You've got taste! This was recommended to me by a Korean friend, otherwise I would never have known about it. Another humorous send-up of Asian movies was Big Trouble in Little China.

Near Dark (vampire movie made by supporting cast of Aliens, right after Aliens)

Probably the best modern-day vampire flick ever made.

If I had to generalize about the type of movies I watch over and over, what they all have is intense acting and an intelligent plot. It helps to have some mystery, some action and good dialogue, but chemistry and intensity are the keys. So:

All Hitchcock movies

All DePalma's Hitchcockian mysteries (Body Double etc)

Last Embrace (one of Jonathan Demme's Hitchcockian movies)

The Conformist (Bertolucci - I managed to get a tape of it at an auction)

True Romance

Mulholland Drive

The Good Thief

Heat

Sexy Beast

Blood Simple

The Man Who Wasn't There

Phantasm

Sea of Love

To Live and Die in LA

Dog Soldiers (aka Who'll Stop the Rain)

Don Juan DeMarco

There are also a few martial arts movies have all the right ingredients, such as King Hu's three masterpieces from the 60s:

Come Drink With Me (the star was in Crouching Tiger 35 years later)

Touch of Zen (inspired the bamboo forest scene in Crouching Tiger)

Dragon Inn

In the 90s:

Iron Monkey (greatest kung-<deleted> movie of all time, starring Donnie Yen)

Dragon Inn (1992 remake with Donnie Yen and Maggie Cheung)

And for humour, Jackie Chan's early movies:

Drunken Master

Snake in the Eagle's Shadow

I liked it better, but they are both good. Not many bad guys can beat Lance Henrikson. Near Dark was directed by Kathryn Bigelow (wife of James Cameron), who went on to make Point Break and Strange Days.

Thanks for the tip.

I LOVE this genre when done well (which is not very often).

Scarface - speaks for itself!

The Big Blue - Starring Jean Reno and Jean-marc Barr. Classic scenes in the uncut version..pished in the underwater pod...

Betty Blue (thats not a porn) Strarring Béatrice Dalle shes just to cute! Even though insane in this movie, I just always comeback to watching it.... heres a little info on the movie. Well worth watching.

Zorg is a handyman working in France, maintaining and looking after the bungalows. He lives a quiet and peaceful life, working diligently and writing in his spare time. One day Betty walks into his life, a young woman who is as beautiful as she is wild and unpredictable. After a dispute with Zorg's boss they leave and Betty manages to get a job at a restaurant. She persuades Zorg to try and get one of his books published but it is rejected which makes Betty fly into a rage. Suddenly Betty's wild manners starts to get out of control. Zorg sees the woman he loves slowly going insane. Can his love prevail even if it comes to the worst?

Ryan's Daughter and Dr. Zhivago.

Ryan's Daughter..........great musical score running throughout the film......composer Maurice Jarre also composed the music for Doctor Zhivago.

Two great....great movies........

Ryan's Daughter and Dr. Zhivago were both directed by the late, great David Lean. Didn't think Robert Mitchum could act until I saw him in the former.

I would recommend 'Betty Blue' to anyone and everyone. I have never heard anyone say they didn't like it! Although my wife loved it, she wouldn't watch it again - too upsetting!

Yes, a classic movie!

Betty Blue - handyman and dangerously schizoid maphop France practically waiting for her to crack up - when it finally happens the grisly violence doesn't quite mesh with the light tone of what's come before. Well photographed and sometimes funny, but ultimately much ado about nothing. If you're watching this for sex, don't miss the opening five minutes. (Director's cut: 192 minutes) - Leonard Maltin -

Only two and a half stars in the particular movie guide I've quoted from above. IMHO deserves four!
