LondonPete
Hi guys. I'm a fairly average bloke. Nothing special. So I came to Thailand to start a new life. And I set up my new life down south in Songkhla. Then I met this weird girl. And cos of her, I read loads of stuff about Thailand's history. Basically, I was like you guys. I used to think that the Japanese entered WWII by attacking Pearl Harbour. But that's not the truth. See, the Japanese entered WWII by invading Songkhla. True! Trust me!! Google it if you don't believe me. From what I read, the Japanese done over Songkhla and Pattani a good few hours before they hit Pearl Harbour. Anyway (and here's my point) I've met this great Thai girl. But I think now that she's probably descended from some Imperial Japanese Soldier. It's odd. It's doing my head in. It's like -- well -- I think I'm starting to turn a bit Japanese. Seriously, I really think so.

chiangmaikelly
1940 Prior to World War II France resisted all efforts for independence by Vietnamese. Following Germany's conquest of France in 1940 Japanese targeted Indochina to incorportate into their empire. 1940 The Royal Thai Air Force flew American-built Vought Corsairs out of Udorn during the French-Thai War. Bases were also located at Ubon, Nakon Phanom and Sisaket. Early Jan 1941 Thailand invaded French Indochina beginning the French-Thai War. The Thais were better equipped and outnumbering the French forces, easily took Laos. 28 Jan 1941 Japanese mediated the French-Thai conflict and a general armistice was declared. 9 May 1941 Treaty was signed in Tokyo with the French being coerced by the Japanese into relinquishing its hold on disputed territories. Oct 1941 Field Marshal Phibunsongkhram (Phibun) gave a secret verbal promise to support the Japanese in the event of an invasion of Malaya. Phibun appeared to have been quite ready to forget his promise if circumstances changed and in fact the Thai government asked both the British and United States in 1941 for guarantees of effective support if they were invaded. 8 Dec 1941 A few hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan demanded the right to move across Thailand to the Malayan frontier. Japan invaded Thailand and engaged the Thai Army for six to eight hours before Philbun ordered an armistice. Shortly afterward the Japan was granted free passage. 21 Dec 1941 Thailand and Japan sign a military alliance with a secret protocol wherein Tokyo agreed to help Thailand get back territories lost to the British and French. Thailand then assisted Japan in her war against the Allies. 25 Jan 1942 Thailand declares war on Allied Powers. 31 Jul 1944 When it was clear that Japan was losing the war, Phibun was dumped in favor of civilian, Khuang Apaiwong. http://udornrtafb.tripod.com/id68.html
CWMcMurray
Never thought Japan only entered WWII with Bombing Pearl Harbor??? For Japan, their military action started on September 18, 1931 when Japan invaded Manchuria. Although for me, the official start of WWII was on September 27, 1940 when Germany, Italy, and Japan signed the Tripartite Pact. There were of course Military actions by all 3 countries prior to this date, the signing of this pact signified the official birth of the Axis powers This changed it from 3 independent local conflicts to a World wide conflict

BigJohnnyBKK
These are the sort of tactics that so successfully prevented Thailand from being colonized, playing both sides off each other being ready to jump into bed with whoever can help accomplish the long-term objectives. Principle has no real place in international relations, only national self-interest. Those countries making their decisions based on idealism or abstract morality always come to regret it. Maybe just as well for the world that the US is constantly shooting itself in the foot.

When the US built U-Tapao airport just outside where Pattaya is now they saved $8000 dollars per round trip bombing run (over Guam). As a result of that 80% of the bombing of North Vietnam came from Thailand. $8000 per flight back in the 60's was really big bucks and a smart move for both Thailand who got to keep the airport and the US who saved all that money. I was agreeing with him and pointing out that both Thailand and the USA engaged in this during the Vietnam war. Although I think it's true that in the later stages leaders were explicitly aware they were continuing the conflict based on pure commercial motives, I think when we first got involved the more idealistic leaders at that time thought they were doing so based on moral principles. I doubt if we would have gotten involved in the first place looking at the costs/benefit equation from a POV based purely on national interest. Once you're committed to seeing a war through of course attention shifts to getting the job done as efficiently as possible, but by then it becomes pretty impossible to bring up the question of whether we should be involved in the first place.
