I got there at 10 am as the lady on the phone told me to do (I had already talked with her about the procedure on the phone - she had told me already that it would be less than 10,000b - fine with me).

I filled in some forms, got my blood pressure checked - everything ok.

Went to see the doctor and find cost.

Doctor said - so what's the problem?

I said - no problem, I just want a vasectomy.

He said - how many kids you got?

me: umm - zero

him : raised eyebrows a little

me : I dont want any they are too expensive (I was saying this in Thai)

him : ok, you need to speak to family planning

me : I just want vasectomy please.

him : ok, follow nurse...

nurse takes me to another area - she then points at my enrolment form and says you are too young!

me : What?! no way am I too young I am 40 next year! I want to speak to doc again.

off I go to the doctor... he then tells me that I have to have children before I can have Vac... now I think they are taking the p***... oh, actually I have a daughter! then he says you have to have 2... I say - actually, yes I have 2.

this is turning into a farce - but I carry on anyway as they have wound me up.

Doctor says - you should go to a private clinic - I say your staff knew what I wanted and I am here now - please book me in, I have already called private hospital and they directed me here.

Ok, we just need to see birth certificate of your 2 daughters.

So after all of this, I did not get booked in and it cost me 500b and a wasted morning!

I should have just said fine - I dont want to pay for the fee and you should have asked me if I had any kids on the phone - but it had gone too far by this point.

No difference to the western world. Without kids not easy to get vasectomy done. The visit of a psychologist for family planning is mandatory and if you are married your wife have to sign agreement as well. Try it again and be prepared to lay open your reasons.

To the OP... what kind of a medical facility led you on the escapade you describe above?

Hua Hin government hospital - its 4000b here they told me today. 20,000b - 25,000b at the Bangkok hospital Hua Hin. Sao Paulo private hospital (cheaper one) told me they don't do them and go to the government one as its a simple procedure.

Think I am going to have to make a trip in to Bangkok or find some fake birth certificates!!

There's a place that does it free in BKK and give you a hotdog afterwards. They have the same 2 children requirement though, any fewer and they show you the door. Also the youngest must be at least 2 years old.

Tell me more about the hot dog please. Do they serve it with relish & mustard?

Is it true that there's a fine line between a vasectomy and a sex change? Kinda like the "Red or Blue wire" dilemma during a bomb disposal. sad.png

Sensible doctor I'm afraid to say.

I have to disagree, though I understand why they won't do the procedure.

I hate this whole "you have to have children" BS. The world is way overpopulated, and the more men that want the snip, the better.

You are joking (about the psychologist) I hope? If not it has changed a lot in the 8 years or so since I had mine. I had no kids and no problem getting it done.

exactly - I think a lot of men (thai or farang) in Thailand would be able to disappear very easily if they got a girl pregnant - I know of one girl personally who has a child from a farang and he has done a runner. I did offer to try and track him down for her when I was back in the UK to get the child support coming in which is rightfully her childs, but she decided against it.

There are two types or methods for vasectomy, choose wisely grass-hopper or you'll be bow legged and black & blue for weeks.

Have bags of frozen peas ready if undergoing procedure type 2.

I didn't get that far as my daughter was not yet 2 years old. Like the OP I was shown the door and never went back. However, I am sure they would have served it with relish aforethought.

Bloody red tape! A man has to go father 2 kids and endure a vasectomy to get a good hot dog these days. sad.png

That's it. Hold the vasectomy, I'm going for the ball massage and green tea instead.

@ Payboy....Ball massage , mighty good decision , old chap. The right one or the left one ?

Btw , when did they substitute ginseng tea with green tea ?

I had mine done in Canada about twenty years ago. Didn't have any kids then, and I assume none now. No hassles -just went in to an arranged appointment with the doctor and came out twenty minutes later a happy man. Sure no pschologist or any other exam needed then.

I'd do both if I had to.

I won't have any gin if it isn't served with tonic.

Last time I went out to eat, I asked for "not spicy" and no sugar in my iced tea.

Got emphatic assurances I'd get exactly what I asked for...

That experience has kind of soured me on asking for complicated things, or things of any importance.

God only knows how I'd end up if I went out looking for a vasectomy.

Don't know about other countries, but definitely nto the case in the U.S. No laws about it, you just have to be of legal age and the physician willing to do it. Now, re the last part, individual doctors vary in how thwey go about assurring themselves that the patient is making an informed choice. Certainly more questions will be asked/probing (verbal!) done in the case of someone with no children. But no legal requirewment to see a shrink or get a spouse's consent.

I suspect mroe regulation comes into play when it is being done under a government health system, be it western or Thai.

OP - go to a private hospital. You'll still need to convince the doctor that you have fully though this through -- would have to do that anywhere -- but no fixed regulations about # children etc.
