ANGTHONG: -- Livestock officials in Angthong province are assigned to visit a temple in Pho Thong district today to check on reports that scores of abandoned cats there have died of cat flu disease.

Angthong livestock chief Prasit Puangthong said he was informed about the mysterious deaths of cats at Wat Khao Kaew and already assigned his team to check the cause of the deaths.

"There are a large number of cats abandoned at the temple and reports said many of them died from unknown disease. At this stage, I could not say whether cat flu disease is the cause of death until our staff visits the temple," he said.

However, he said, if it is the disease, the public should not be worried because it cannot spread from cats to humans.

Meanwhile a Nation reporter visiting the temple yesterday found about 70 felines there, some of which appeared to be in weak condition and have wounds.

A nun, Payao Inman, 58, who took care of the cats, said there were previously about 200 cats at the temple but since last week, many had died from unknown disease one by one, at about two a day.

"Before they died, they would have wounds on the body, coughing, running noses, lack of appetite, and convulsion.

If the disease hit a mother cat, it would claim the lives of the mother and the kittens, the nun said. She added the symptoms seemed to fit those of cat flu disease.

What a surprise. Everytime I visited a temple with cats I wanted to cry for the bad conditions the cats are in. With so much money the people is donating they could take care of them spending just a fraction, after all they are supposed to abandon the material things.

Good, might be a good opportunity to rid the country of these pests and hopefully it might cross to the canine population and also deplete or drastically reduce these pests at the same time.

What a small minded person you must be. If everybody would have a mindset like you we would soon have no people on this planet.

You act as if it is the fault of the cats that there are so many (some like dogs) here in Thailand. If the Thai authorities would spend a little of their time and a little of the taxpayers' money these problems could be dealt with easily. It’s the result of years of mismanaging this country and having priorities in the wrong place.

People like you certainly don't make a better world.

Please expand on your thesis between cats and dogs and no people on this planet, should make for an interesting discussion. You might also like to discuss the link between unchecked diseased cats and dogs running wild over most of Thailand and small minded people, and while you are at it, can you advise if small minded people are similar to those people who wear blinkers throughout their life.

Be careful, the karma police might pay you a visit one of these days.

Unfortunately the overpopulation of companion animals is a result of the collective indifference of pet owners and the government. With a tiny fraction of the hundreds of billions wasted on rice subsidies and useless airships for the military, systematic sterilization and vaccination campaigns could prevent this depressing cycle of overgrowth and disease.

But of course, these kinds of programs don't buy a lot of votes, do not ensure the loyalty of the military and have very low graft-value. So, no chance at all...

Cat deaths at temple indicates cat flu outbreak

Livestock officials indicate cats at Angthong temple died of cat flu disease.

ANGTHONG: -- The initial probe into the deaths of several cats abandoned at a temple in Angthong province has revealed that they died of cat flu disease, a provincial livestock official said on Monday.

Krissana Komonchan said the remaining cats at Wat Khao Kaew in Pho Thong district, which appeared to have symptoms, were given antibiotic injections. No cure is available for the disease and all that can be done is to treat the symptoms.

The official was speaking after visiting the temple Monday to check reports that felines abandoned at the temple had died of mysterious disease, possibly cat flu.

Krissana said the public should not worry as while the disease can spread between dogs and cats, it is not transmissible to humans.

This illness is caused by a virus that is spread via the saliva to unvaccinated cats or dogs in poor health and condition. The spread of the virus at the temple was the result of a lack of hygiene and the crowded living conditions of the animals.

"The virus can spread quickly in the temple because there is no quarantine or separation of the sick animals."

An inspection showed that the dogs and cats at the temple have skin disease, making them vulnerable and easily infected by the virus.

Krissana said he would confirm the diagnoses by sending saliva and laboratory testing. The results of the tests are expected within eight to ten days.

A nun, Payao Inman, 58, who took care of the cats, had said there were previously about 200 cats at the temple but since last week, many had died at a rate of about two a day.

"Before they died, they would have sores on their bodies, coughs, runny noses, no appetite, and convulsions.

"If the disease hit a mother cat, it would claim the lives of the mother and the kittens," the nun said. She added the symptoms seemed to fit those of cat flu disease.

Maybe it's Cat Scratch Fever. whistling.gif

More than likely, Feline HIV, has pneumonia like symptoms, kills in a week or so............rampant in Africa. As for the thought of the temple giving money to save a couple hundred cats, I say a trip to the crocodile farm is a better solution.coffee1.gif

We have 100's well lots and lots of strays around our home and they annoy the crap out of me, fighting all bloody night right next to our window, the stench around the house not to mention the excrement all over bloody place right in your doorway every morning. We are constantly cleaning and washing after the vermon. Why on earth don't people have then neutered. It should be our responsiblty to clean up after these pests, I won't say what I would like to do to them.

Get yourself a decent dog. I < Snip! > hate cats and my dog has killed 6 of the b*ggers. No, (before the bleeding heart < Snip! > start), I did not "set" him on them, rather they are stupid enough to come in our garden, mostly at night and then they get what they deserve - sum num < Snip! > nah!

A Loyal dog is a true companion. A fickle feline........?

Cheers,

Pikey.

''small minded'' people like him, came up with big successful ideas, like spaying and neutering, something Thai dont want to spend money or time on. The laws of Nature dictate, when the numbers of any species exceeds the food source, disease and other measures come to play, and reduce the numbers so that said species can survive. Feeding them all, only reproduces more, adding to an existing problem already.

Cats (domesticated or otherwise) are infinitely preferable to dogs.

Cats hunt and kill wild life, dogs do not.

And humans not only do all of the above but also moan and whine, suppose those should also be "taken out" in most painful way.

Oh but wait you moved to Thailand , so you must be on par with god now

Umm, does this feline flu spread to any other wildlife other than dogs? Say chickens perhaps? Any info anyone?

Just on Fox last night, no can not, however humans can pass on flue onto cats and other animals if in close contact

Toxoplasmosis a parasitic disease, the primary host is the cat family and are infected by eating infected meat mainly pork. Cats are the primary source of infection to human hosts.

@ featography - Is it really small minded for someone to suggest the pet owners, cats owners in this topic have thier animals neutered? The problem with a lot of pet owners is that they love the cute little fluffy kittens who are so adorable just like a newborn child. When they get older they are no longer so appealing an cute and are dumped where they become a nuisance and breed out of control. If a lot of these cats and the generations before them were neutered then there would be no story of scores of abandoned cats dying and suffering.

Fair enough thais do not want to spend money or time on neutering abandoned and feral cats but to suggest that someone is small minded for suggesting a solution to a large problem is just a tad silly.

You say the laws of nature dictate and when numbers of any species exceed the food source then other measures come into play. Does this mean when a charity comes knocking to feed the starving around the world we should just say, let nature take it's course because if we feed them they will breed adding to an existing problem? We wouldn't let the human species starve but we would try and educate them about contraception. With cats we can't run around and educate cats on contraception or attach condoms to the males but we can do the next best thing, neutering.

Got a mob of semi wild dogs down by the river here, some silly woman feeds them.

No one can go where they are for fear of being attacked, they defend their territory.

One day a kid is going to get killed,

Was worse in Hua Hin with diseased dogs everywhere.

Cats also are a noisey pest but not nearly so many of them.

The show was only related to flue, not parasites, AGAIN according to Fox last night, cats cannot pass any flue on to humans.

Also not sure what kind of cats eat pork, all mine eat tuna, fish and sea food, though mine could be high-so :)
