hi folks...we just bought set of tires, 14" Firestones for our old minivan for 2200baht per tire including installation and balancing...I wanted to haggle the price but the wife thought that it was a good deal...I inspected the new tires and looked around the premises and it looked to be a sound western-style retail tire outlet with competent staff...

this is in a small town in the provinces...howzat price sound?

What tyres and size?

I got some 195/14 firestones for the same price. I thought it was an OK deal.. next cheapest was 2600 per Tyre (deestone).

yeah...they are 195/14 Firestones so it sounds like we got the same deal...

how does the Firestone brand compare with others these days? when I was a kid in the 1950s they sponsored a lot of TV shows and were considered to be the best in america...this is before the radial steel belt technology...

I think you got a really good price on those tires, Firestone are still a good brand, bought by Bridgestone in the 80's so the R&D must be the same, but the image has obviously never recovered from the 'SUV roll-over cover-up' debacle in the 90s. You'll pay 2,700 for 195/14 Bridgestones, the only difference being (correct me if I'm wrong) they will have been manufactured in Japan and imported. If the place you bought them from offers free periodic rotations (like B-Quik) then you've struck gold.

all this sounds like good news so maybe I'll go back and ingratiate meself to the shop owner...when I was there they had a beat up old pickup up on a jack with the front end dismantled replacing the shocks so they got at least one qualified mechanic...a nasty looking job on an old POS; the kind of thing that ye hate t'see comin' thru the door when ye work there...(tutsi was a car mechanic in Westwood and the customers included Charlston Heston, Carol Burnett and Neil Simon's wife Marsha Mason from 'The Goodbye Girl'...a car mechanic to the stars...and they drived a Chrysler, a Rolls and a Mercedes, respectively...)

I need to find a replacement for the BiL who I give money to to service the ride and I suspect that he just puts it in his pocket and goes looking for prostitutes...and the wife is capable of supervising any work required; she was smiling and chatty with the owner so's we got a foot in, looks like...

I got some 185-14's for one of our work trucks for 1950 baht each. No idea what they are other than black and round. The strange noise that I thought was a dodgy wheel bearing has gone so the old tires must have been , well... old.

Hope you checked their manufacture date, it's on the sidewall. thumbsup.gif

will you get outta here? I'm getting tires for an old van that usually carries a load of squealing children and not some GTO hotrod and etc...

however, you are right; there is a manufacturing date embossed onto the tire that the purchaser should look at...I had them roll out the stock that I purchased and looked them over and they looked OK like new tires should...

I don't drive the mother as I drink too much but tires are safety equipment and we need to have them in good shape...the wife brought home the old tires and they were a mess and we had just been out on the road at highway speeds with a load of small children...and I wanted to stick the BiL's nose innit just like a naughty dog but then with the loss of face he'd want to come while I slept and murder me...

Marsha Mason eh? She began racing cars in an SCCA Improved Touring stock class some decades ago, wonder if she's still driving? Ever worked on any of her race cars? They were basically hopped up street machines due to class rules.

I mentioned the date thing cos of my suspicious mind where something is being sold cheap, in this case a small outlet buying up some old tyre stock. smile.png

marsha drove a merc 350SL sports coupe, a nice little number with the best car stereo that I've ever heard...and I went up to Bel Air to deliver it to Neil Simon's house...impressive; here was the most expensive real estate in west LA with a little ranch-style house and you almost expected marsha to greet you at the door and ask if you wanted a tuna sandwich...

impressive...although I never met her I felt like we were friends...this was about 1977...

That was my first thought too!

The first time his wife has to make an emergency lane change will tell if the tyres are good enough!

I found rather inexpensive deestone tires in a shop around the corner

215/45 R17 87 W @ 2,600 Baht a pop. That is about 2,000 Baht cheaper than tires in another shop which also had a lower weight and speed rating.

Anyone can comment on deestone tires?

Heres one for Trans Am.Why dont all tyres show a Tempratue Rateing.?.

You may need to PM the lad so he knows this thread is up and running again.

What do you mean by Temperature rating ?

Tyres are designed to cope with most variations of temp. Drag race tyres on the drive wheels are a very soft compound that must be heated up to make them sticky via a burnout. F1 type slick tyres are soft and need heat for traction without them falling apart.

I suppose all that was not what you meant. laugh.png

That was all i meant. Theres no Temp Range Stamp on all Tyres here, so why do Mich have them, and Deestone/Cheapoes dont.?.

There are different standards for Car tyre sizes and marking, mostly from the US or European tyre organisations but there are some government and manufacturer codes thrown in. The temperature rating was a US requirement so some tyres have it and some don't, depending on where they are intended for sale.

There is a good article on tyre standards at http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html
