Double or triple entry tourist visa. If you get the double just before you leave , it is good for 6 months and he can get almost 180 permission to stay. Upon entry he will get 60 days, that can be extended for 30 days at immigration for 1900 baht. On the last day of the extension, he will have to exit Thailand, enter another country and reenter Thailand. He will be able to get another 60 + 30 days. With a triple he can do it again, getting almost 270 days. He must use all entries by the "enter before" date on the visa, that's why he should not get the visa early since it will only be valid for 6 months.

He might be able to get a Non Imm O Visa.

A single entry will get 90 days. A Multi Entry will get unlimited entries for a year. 90 day maximum each entry.

Whatever suits him best.
