Titanium Teeth Implants

Greetings one and all and happy new year etc

I know this has been asked before but i really need to be accurate in making a decision as to whether i should fly to thailand ( been there before) and get a couple of dental implants.

so much can go wrong anywhere like infection, wrong setting etc etc. but there are cowboys in the LOS as we all know..

have any of you got any feedback on the best places to get this done and some pointers on what may go wrong...have any of you had negative experiences with this type of dental work?.....i guess getting done over by amateurs is my biggest fear ( and i don't mean by night :-) ) )

i live in new zealand and it's about 240,000 baht to get implants done here i.e. $ 6k kiwi. so there'd be big savings coming to Thai.

all feedback much appreciated.

cheers

I'll get beat up for this, but I checked with many dentists here, including at Bumrungrad.

I ended up getting my crowns in the States, spending a lot more. i just wasn't comfortable. I've only found one, on Koh Chang, who even did a good cleaning.

NOTE: I haven't checked every dentist in Thailand (but I checked a lot). So, get specifics and check them out.

Hair transplants, however, was an entirely different matter. A most excellent doctor here for that.

Any of the private hosptials are ok...BKK Pattaya etc, however your problem may be the fact that you will not get all this work completed in one sitting....there is time required between getting the implant done and getting the final crowns done...can be anywhere from 3 to 6 months as the implants need to bond into the jaw properly (and dont let anyone tell you different)

Also you need to get x-rays to ensure you have enough bone in your jaw to take in the implant, if memory serves its a thickness of 5.0mm, if you dont have this and still want implants you need to do what they call a sinus lift...ie they do a bone graft into your jaw to increase thickess,so there would be addtional time for the healing from this OP as well...

I'd recommend Dental Hospital Bangkok:

Great place for dental work. The doctor at Pattaya International Hospital that specializes in implants is great also. He quoted me around 90,000B or so. Trained overseas.

I would guess the better hospitals here would be fine.

Let's move this over to the health forum.

I've had a fair amount of dental work (including implants) and I think Bangkok Hostital Dental Center on Petchaburi is great. Dr. Bundit did two of my implants and I thought the service as good or better better than what I have had done in the US.

As an FYI....you can get the bone graft and the implant on the same day. Not many places do this...and I don't know if this is good or not. I got an offer to do this in the US, but the price was crazy. I think mine in the US was $3500, about 6 years ago. Took 1 year to get everything finalized. But it's great now. Looking to get another one done soon here in Thailand.

I'd add Thantakit to the list, along with Bangkok Hospital Dental Clinic. When I checked a few years ago, the Dental Hospital was quite a bit more expensive when it came to implants than other places.

I concur that getting implants can be a very long process involving several visits spaced out over months and more. Remember that depending on location the dentist won't necessarily be able to work on all the implants at the same time. Once you look at the schedule for the work, you might decide it's not worth the savings financially, after factoring in the cost of several trips to Bangkok.

In any event, do a lot of research yourself on implants and the different brands of implants; don't get stuck with a cheaper implant that's not widely used, or you could have great problems finding a dentist to fix it if there are problems down the road, keeping in mind that the metal crowns on top of the implants usually need to be replaced every decade or so.

You cant get a sinus lift and implant done in the same location on the same day as the bone graft has to "take" and fuse with your jaw bone, before getting the implant done, otherwise it will fail...and this come from a friend of mine who is a dental surgeon who actually does implants at one of the bigger private hospitals....biggrin.png

Typically you get sinus lift done, and they wait a few weeks/months to ensure the graft has taken before getting the implant done, so one assumes it wasnt a sinus lift you had done..

Here's a place in Thailand that does the lift and implant on the same day, if you qualify:

Dental implant posts may sometimes be placed either at the same time when sinus lift is done or several months later depending on each individual case.

Here's the guy I visited in Las Vegas a few years ago. Everything done in one day. But it was expensive.

Most dentists won't do this. Mine wouldn't. But seems some do.

It's been over a year, but I'm thinking the implant was about 65K and another 20K for the crown. (gold molar)

Hope you're not an accountant. I know 240,000 Baht is about $8000 Can or US, and I'm pretty sure the Kiwi dollar is usually worth crap these days. (I used to live there and there was always too much month left at the end of the dollars).

So I checked. 1 Kiwi only buys 25 Baht. So 240,000 will cost you $9600 Kiwi.

Still, I'd be interested to hear how you get on as I also need some screw-ins.

The last time I got a quote in Canada the total was about $35,000. I told them If I had that much money I'd be buying a boat!

I have had two types of implant, both done in Spain.

The first was a screw in and has been totally successful since it was done about 12 years ago.

The second was a "push in" and needed to wait 6 months before being able to bear a load.

Unfortunately, I stupidly bit on something hard with it within a few months of having it.

It came loose and just fell out.

The second "push in" , inserted at about the same time as the others, was protected by a bridge and settled down OK but after a few years it had infection after infection and had to be removed.

All that glisters is not gold.

The screw in type is not necessarily one that can be fitted in every case, it depends on your jaw bone thickness etc.

Google by all means and get a better understanding, but it will be up to your dentist to say which type would be best for you.

BTW, I rather enjoyed mikecwn's observation:-

I got work done in Chiang Rai Hospital in 2005. Paid 60000 Bt for a bridge with three teeth and 4 teeth capped and whitening of the rest in the surgery. Walked in and asked for the best dentist in the place, and the female dentist I saw said no but you get me. So I asked are you any good and she said yes.

The teeth are still working fine no problems, and the dentist turned out to be very good. I also understand there are some good dentists in Chiang Mai, just need to do the research.

Bangkok although cheaper than say Oz or NZ, may be a little bit dearer than Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai. Most of the dentist I think you will find have been trained overseas. Go to the hospital sites and have a look at the bio's of the dentists.

This work would have cost me about $7000-$8000 in Oz.

But yeah there are some cowboy type dentists out there, but my suggestion is to stick to the bigger services, use the internet to research, send emails to place's you feel comfortable with asking costs and procedure time. If you feel comfortable with replies pick one and go for it. Titanium implants have been around for a while so picking someone will mean that they have plenty of experience.

Good luck.

My aunt got multiple implants done at Bangkok Smile Dental. Each implant costs 75000 baht both titanium post and crown parts. Took two trips to Thailand 4 months apart from each other. She was lucky her bone was still ok and didnt need any grafts. She was also checking Dental Hospital in Thonglor but found their price was outrageous. When checking for implant price , dont forget to ask which brand they use. Always go for well-known brands. As far as i know Astratech, Straumann and Nobel Biocare are top three and world wide used. In case the crown comes loose or there is any problems with your implants, your doctor back home can always fix it for you. I bet it is not fun spending money on another trip to Thailand just for a loose crown.

These figures seen rather high for Thailand.......??

In the Uk or certainly where I live they are available complete at £1050 per tooth done and dusted.........

Specialist centre that deals only with Implants Veneers etc.......Dont do regular work

Perhaps the OP fancies a trip to sunny England !!
