We are currently on temp electric and would like to go onto permanent the cost of this I was told today would be bht170000, is this a scam as the electric is 170 metres from my property?

Was it PEA who told you this or your contractor?

Is the temp meter near your property? (ie just outside the boundary)

Is the 170m all on your land?

Provided you have a Tabien Baan (house book) you should be able to replace your temp meter with permanent power for a nominal fee.

PEA will expect to inspect your installation before considering permanent power.

It's still unclear what the 170k Baht was quoted for, a simple meter change to permanent is significantly less. Like I asked earlier, who actually quoted tha amount?

Is the cable between the meter and the house on permanent poles and correctly sized (probably 25mm2 copper)?

Is the temporary meter of sufficient size for your demand (so a simple like for like swap is possible)?

In our little town, at the local PEA office, the actual prices are posted on a large sign board above the engineering department. It is quite transparent what the cost will be for NEW service, including deposits. However what is not posted is a distance charge OR 3 phase cables / poles / transformers, since that can vary so much with the load / distance. But it is VERY clear on all the various SINGLE PHASE meter connections. I've posted many times on Thai Visa, that you do NOT have to use the PEA to install poles, wires or transformers. If you have a large installation it might be worth getting two written price quotes form LICENSED electrical contractors. Often these same licensed electrical contractors work or did work, at the PEA, and they can submit the proper documentation to see your service connected without delay, without any bribes and at a lower cost than the PEA quotes, perhaps with a better warranty on the 3 phase transformer. Just remember to save your written receipt for any REFUNDABLE DEPOSITS with the PEA.
