I apologise if i seem to be missing something, but after a cursory look through these forums, i cant seem to find one dedicated to dentistry.

Am a little surprised as am aware that so many people come here for dental work.

Anyway, am looking for information on getting dental implants so if anyone can give me any pointers to a sub-forum here that ive missed or perhaps another forum then i would be very grateful....thank you

This is the proper forum for such questions. Perhaps start with where you would like to obtain and how long you are prepared to remain and any specific types/questions? Be aware that the price is often not much below those in other countries - most medical tourism is not due to dentistry.

i to need some dental surgery[tooth extraction] but i am worried about the dentists knowledge of having had heart surgery which was a new aota valve and having to take warfarin for life which controls the blood.my book tells me if i have any work done on my teeth that i must inform the dentist,as this is the land of nods i am not sure about having it done.

A good dental office should ask and be aware of precautions. At Vejthani Hospital the dental center checks blood pressure before every visit and asks medical history. My first visit for cleaning was delayed to consult with doctors for stop of preventative aspirin due to the amount of plaque that required removal - since than have not had to stop as they have good knowledge of blood flow but they obviously do know the dangers of medical drug treatment and take precautions. I expect many of the major clinics would also be careful but not so sure of some local Soi clinics.

I am in the profession and have taught at Chula. I have interfaced with both extrordinary and ordinary practioners in a few places around the country. This is to say that I have an insider's knowledge even at the same time as I have been a patient. My conclusion is that in Thailand the level of care varies sigificantly between various offices an practicioners, the same as anywhere else. Doubtless you will only be considering those with English-speaking staff, and that usully also means that the dentists have had a least part of their education in the US. This means that they will know how to give the very best care available anywhere. Unfortunately, though, just as in the US or anywhere else, the system is only as good as the man or woman running it. Even though they may KNOW what is best to do, there is no guarantee that they will use the best practices. I have personally seen some of the very top practicioners (dental AND medical) take shortcuts that would cause them to lose their house in America. Some of them have done things that ar called malpractice per se - meaning there is no defense for their actions, even if no harm came from them. This happens because most of their patients don't know any better added to the fact that there is very little accountability for malpractice here. At the same time, I confess that I have had virually all of my dental work for the last decade - including an implant - done here, so how bad can I really think it is? The bottom line is to use our head and get specific recmmendations from someone whose opinion you can respect, and then use your own judgement. As in any other part of the world, do not judge the dentist as good by his posh surroundings, though if his office looks shabby, you can be pretty sure you're in the wrong place. I would generalize and say that the best care available in Thailand is usually not the bestcare available in the world, (when was the last time you heard of som king or super-rich person flying in to Thailand for theirdental work?) but unless you live in some major cosmopolitan area in the West, the very good clinics in Bangkok are probably at least as good as the best you can find in your neighborhood. And for sure they are cheaper.

For 7 or 8 years before moving to Bangkok I would visit annually and started seeing a dentist here: www.asavanant.com I continued to see my dentist in New York City all those years, resulting in the only period I have ever had occasion to have all dental work routinely checked by another, independent dentist. Each dentist checked the work of the other dentist. The dentist at Asavanant found a significant defect in the work of the New York dentist, but not vice versa. In particular, the NYC dentist found all the Asavanant work to have been done correctly.

So, now I have 9 years experience with Asavanant. This includes several CEREC implants. There are other kinds of implants, so this may not be what the OP is interested in. At any rate, Asavanant's work on the CEREC implants, as reviewed by the NYC dentist, has been excellent. Asavanant's prices were about 15% to 20% of the New York dentist's, although Asavanant is not cheap by local standards.

Inquisitive makes some very good points as I am retired from the profession and agree with his assessment. So many times over the years I have heard someone say; "He/She is a great Dentist, based solely on being in the same church or some other social group; when the reality is, as Inquisitive says so well in his above post.

My question is for anyone having any experience with a good Pediatric Dentist here in BKK. This was not my speciality and I would be grateful for any referrals. I would prefer a practice where the dentist only works on children as opposed to a large clinic or hospital.

Been using Bangkok Smile Dental for years and very happy with the doctor and the dental work. They are highly specialized in dental implants, even some complicated implants you will never see at home. A friend of mine got something called all-on-4 which is like a full denture attached to 4 implants. Email them your OPG, get the treatment plan/ quote and take it from there.

Is it also true that the dentists there are also very attractive?

Yes, for sure. At least the one i saw is. Thai gals can be very gorgeous, when they dont walk around with those stupid "big eyes" of course!
