With all the fuss going on in Europe with horsemeat 'contaminating' minced beef, I wonder what goes into "mince" here in Thailand.!!

Buffalo for sure I guess. if its cheaper.

Personaly. I ve eaten Horsemeat in Belgium some years ago, quite liked it,maybe a bit sweeter than Beef.

Maybe Tesco in UK could market "Shergar' burgers ???

The horsemeat in the food in Europe is from bad quality, too.

So maybe your pointing on Buffalo meat is going in the right direction?

The crappier and cheaper the product...the more likely it contained horsemeat. The issue is hormones used....not that it is specifically horsemeat.

That said, I am in the UK now and had a lamb burger today for lunch. Was not bad. biggrin.png

I understand there are some farms in Issan raising goats and also in the south for the Muslim population. You sometimes see in on Samui in the Muslim village / fish market but don't know if it's from the island or brought over. Makes a nice change from the usual pork, chicken or duck.

Waugh's curry powder would work.

They sell goat it in the frozen meat section in Mackro, along with frog, deer alligator, ostrich, etc.

There are a few herds of goats around where I live but have never seen it in the market. I asked my wife where to buy it and she said that she could order it, the whole goat, killed and dressed but not butchered. I thought about doing it but decided against it. What would I do with a freezer full of goat if it turned out to be the tough old grandpa of the herd?

Loads of Curries?

On a serious note, I lived in Cyprus as a kid (no pun) and Goat was always the meat of choice at Weddings, a young kidd freshly slaughtered and then cooked over charcoal (Souvlaki)

when i had it in greece[kos] the goats were kept in a field at the back of our appartment there was a billy and a nanny but all the rest were kids,i always knew when it was on the menu one would be missing a day or two before.i expect if it was an old goat[there's a few on tv] you could always make burgers and send the wife to market to sell them.

Goat meat burgers
By Erica Wright
Serves 4

600g goat meat - minced

130g bacon - finely chopped

1 onion - chopped

1 teaspoon ground allspice

½ teaspoon ground coriander

ground black pepper - hold off on the salt as bacon and soy are salty

2-3 tablespoons soy sauce

plain flour for dusting

olive oil for frying

4 tomatoes - halved

salad - to serve

1 Place all of the burger ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Shape into 8 burgers and dust lightly with flour.

2 Heat a little oil in a large, heavy-based frypan that will take the burgers in one layer. Add the burgers and fry for 3-4 minutes. Turn carefully and fry on the other side for another few minutes, then continue cooking until done. The length of time will depend on the thickness of the meat, but 8-10 minutes should just about do it.

3 A few minutes before the burgers are cooked, add the tomato halves to the pan and fry for a few minutes on each side.

4 Place the burgers on paper towelling when cooked, then serve with the fried tomatoes and a side salad.

Did something over Song Kran that I've never done before in the many years I've been here, and that's ordered a hamburger from Sunrise Tacos' Soi 10 location (and had it brought to my home via delivery).

I know people have strong opinions pro and con re Sunrise, but the burger I received wasn't bad, although it suffered a bit from the time delay involved in being handled for home delivery.

The beef patty was good sized, the bun was quite good in taste and texture, and the burger came with a small serving of french fries for 225b via ChefsXP delivery (plus their standard delivery charge).

I guess I ought to get around to trying one prepared and served in the restaurant. Not bad at all as Thailand hamburgers go.

We always buy our meat and grind it ourselves into ground meat, that way we can control the cut of meat and fat content in our ground meats.

I have always eaten goat meat back in the old Country at celebrations and it was always cooked in underground pits and very good and tasty. I use a stand-in way of pit cooking by placing the meat in a covered pot in my UDS Ugly Drum Smoker from 8-12 hours of slow cooking, comes out great.
