Kindle Fire Hd

Featured Replies

Hi,

Thinking of getting the wife a Kindle fire Hd. Just wondering if anyone had any experience with them. What I'm hoping to find out is how well the support Thai language. Are any Thai books or magazine available for it. Also is there a Thai keyboard available to type in Thai?

Thanks,

MP

FWIW, my wife downloaded an app on her iPad from Na-In books which allows her to purchase & read books from that publisher. It works only on the iPad, not the iPhone.

any android tablet will run the Kindle app, and you can download a Thai keyboard as well.

There are also many other reader programs for ebooks which will run on Android. I use Adiko.

Be aware that the Kindle Fire HD is a full blown tablet computer, not just an ebook reader. I bought myself one.

It is awesome for graphics and sound. Best out there, maybe. But it doesn't have the pure "paperwhite" feature. It does have three screen choices; black and white, sepia, and full color. But it's not "Paperwhite." In black and white it is very good but not so good in bright daylight as Paperwhite in the Kindle reader.

IIRC mine is Android ice cream sandwich. It will even open and read Word docs, and of course to texting and email and web surfing, has gps, etc. etc.

There is also the Kindle app for iPad & iPhone. We have both of those plus Kindle Fire. You can be reading a book on any of those 3 devices, and they will stay in sync so that each device always knows what page you're on. It's kinda cool.

Thanks for your comments. Still not sure about how Thai friendly the Fire HD is but good to hear that other options are available.

Neversure, have you tired typing in Thai on your Fire HD?

I looked into this with my Kindle Fire when it first came out. There is no Thai. However, don't forget the Fire (and HD) are an Amazon interface built on top of Android. They go out of their way to hide the Android from you, but it's there.

What I learned at the time, but never had the energy to try, was that you could "hack" the Amazon interface to add in the Thai alphabet, as well as many other international keyboards. In a straight-up Android interface, this apparently is a built-in feature and you can do it with Kindle if you take the time to research the hack. You'll have to google around to find it.
