Got a bit of a problem.....

Early 2004 had a front tooth brake in half longways, also for 30 years had a 1/2 plate with 2 teeth + 2x crown from UK, one was loose, at the time was renting in BKK a Condo while the house was being built, Hospital was very good, ended up with a lot of work 7 crowns and 2 bridges....... still exultant..

After moving into house, a few Villages away was a new Clinic I went to, very good, never had a problem in years..

So to my current problem......... Late Thursday had bad tooth pain, Friday morning went to my Dentist, he was closed on Holiday till Wednesday next... So went to new Hospital, it is still being built but open in the middle of fields 1/2 km rough road in the middle of the rice fields...

Friday a good day as the Dentist is there on Friday mornings only.... problem was a loose filling at the bottom of back tooth, she took out and put in a temp filling, said if pain to go back, but to see her in 4 weeks for good filling...

Pain is still bad, in fact appears that it is now swollen, bottom of mouth and tongue swollen. pain killers will nub pain for 4 or 5 hrs, now difficult to know where the pain is coming from, as everywhere on that side of the mouth has pain now.... about the best I can eat is Porrage, yoghurt or soft fruit..

Question will the pain go away after time ? should I wait till Wednesday and see my Dentist ? wait to next Friday and go back to the Village Government Hospital ? never been but do know there is a Dentist in the Village Hospital at Sai Noi, see if anyone is there today ? or try to find another Clinic around one of the Villages ?

Just out of interest........... If I ever have a problem with pain my Dentist always takes a photo, which come up on the monitor in front of me and then explains what to do or can be done ......... Nothing like that at the Hospital on Friday it was just pull out the filling clean with water and a little bit with the pick and stuff in a temp filling........ also of course a big difference in price Hospital cost 200 baht, Clinic is always 450 and up

If you have an infection, that will have to be dealt with before the dentist can do the necessary. Painkillers and antibiotics for a week, at a guess.

This is not normal and not likely to get better on its own. From the sounds of it you have an infection and the sooner treated the better.

I suggest you immediately see either a dentist or a doctor (a regular doctor can treat the infection) and do not delay as if the bone becomes infected you have a big problem.

You might also want to think twice about utilizing what sounds like a district level hospital. The infection may have been introduced there by inadequate sterile technique.

I would also not use a district level hospital to treat the infection. Go to a the provincial hospital if you camn. District level hospitals have limited range of drugs, supplies and equippment and are usually staffed by doctors right out of school.

Good advice.

A problem like this is best dealt with at a hospital dental surgery.

Infection in the jaw can be very serious. You probably know that many Thai people don't get dental care and go for years with infected mouths. If you care to look into a radiotherapy unit at a provincial government hospital, you will see several people with the ink targets on their cheeks. Where do you think the tumour is? A neighbour of ours died through exactly this, having gone too late for radiotherapy. He did visit a local dentist who, it's said, refused to remove the tooth in question or to treat the infection. I have heard of other similar examples of poor treatment at local clinics.

Have a little strong alcohol, like Regency,Blend, or the like, just a capful, let this rest on the painful tooth, if the pain stops in 1min, then it is a bad filling, if it persists, it could be an abcess under the tooth,in that case [uK] the dentist will want you to have a course of antibiotics to kill the poison before treatment,so there is no risk of futher infection if pulling the tooth is ness,

A slice of raw garlic on the afected area is also good, Natures most potent antibiotic, it stings/burns a bit but the relief is quick,Sensodyne tooth paste and a Listerine mouthwash also helps, an extra pillow or two on your bed keeping your head higher will keep blood pressure down from jaws,

This is all from personal experince, i have suffered for many years with teeth problems, as have my parents brothers ect, i lost all my top teeth at 25, i have about 9 bottom teeth left, and i also have an abcess under 1 of them, ive had 8days on tabs and going to the dentist today for x-ray ect, to check for root probs,

I wish you luck OP, bad teeth can lead to all sorts of gastro probs as well,

Many thanks......... Done nothing so far, I am taking antibiotic, as i know Dentist will not do anything with a infection present.

I have just 1 tooth on the top, all the others are crowns and bridges, have 6 on the bottom, this problem tooth is a main rear Angkor for my clip in plate, the other side the main rear Angkor is no pain but split in half longways, if both have to be pulled then NO main rear Angkor's so will have just 4 front teeth..

Do not think the pain is the tooth any more, as if I tap it = no pain, before tap it and would almost go through the roof.

Sensodyne tooth paste and a Listerine mouthwash, is what I always use.........Will try this.. an extra pillow or two on your bed keeping your head higher will keep blood pressure down from jaws.......... as I sleep with 3 pillows under my feet so they are a good bit higher then my head.

The Dentist, she was in here 40's and is from the main Hospital in Bang bua thong. only goes to the Hospital out in the fields Friday mornings..... is new, very little in use, 3rd floor was Dentist the only office in use on that floor, I went up to floor 4 and 5 both were empty... is called Bang bua thong 2 Hospital.

antibiotic I bought myself, not sure it they have medication at this Hospital, also can only take one type Ciproxyl 500, so always get meds from same place where she know what I can have and stocks it.

Around here where you are there is also an LC dental clinic just opened and the hospital at big king also has a dental department im sure both are staffed today. It might be a bit more expensive then your other places.

Seems you live close to me.

I can't help with your dentist but I have first hand experience of instant pain relief

for toothache. The best I have found is tincture of cloves which is instant and lasts

for quite a long time. I first came across it in Chile S. America but have never been

able to find it in Thailand, but I did find a good substitute for it called M.16 ( and it

has a print of an m16 rifle on the box, and no I am not joking ) and it is made in

thailand by Patar Lab in Bangkok and contains, amongst other things, clove oil and

I have found it almost as good as tincture of cloves. It comes as a little kit with tweezers

and cotton wool to dab the pain area.

Hope it helps and that you can get your teeth fixed soonest.

Good luck.

Also agree with the clove oil pain remedy. I was guzzling ibuprofen and paracetamol to no avail last time I had toothache and had initially been sceptical about the clove oil a colleague offered, but it does work!

Easily applied by soaking a cotton bud in the oil and then applying it to gum area and in my case actually inside the cavity - instant relief. But it's only treating the symptom, not the cause.... I also have very good experience of erythromycin as an effective choice of antibiotics for tooth abscess infection. following the advice of the medic on the ship I was on at the time, I took a double dose the first time then normal thereafter until the course ended - it provided a massive reduction in the pain overnight from a very angry abscess and after the full course cured the infection. Tooth still had a massive hole of course and had to go when I got home.

Thanks all...

Took antibiotic + pain killer for 5 days, appear to start to clear up, by Friday last No pain, so end of next week will do and have the correct filling.

Had a abscess before but nothing like this time.

Suppose its worth mentioning here that you must be ABSOLUTELY certain no infection remains before stopping antibiotics and getting filling etc - pain reduction is not enough. Keep it clean, let it settle and be sure it isn't going to get inflamed again or you'll be going through the whole ugly scenario again. Not nice....

Guess that is why the Dentist said come back for proper filling in 4 weeks ? so maybe not go this week leave it for the 4 weeks to be sure..

Sounds about right. I am of course not a doctor or a dentist. The comments I've made are based on my own experience - I'm a victim of my own neglect of my teeth in my youth leading to quite extensive problems in my late 30's and now early 40's. I had a phobia of the dentist as a younger lad and small problems that I ignored back then or that were not picked up at check ups have come to bother me now. A BIG regret. Fortunately they Thai dentists that I've used seem professional and remarkably pain free - even had wisdom tooth pulled out!

Ignis, you mention you have 3 pillows under your feet when sleeping, seems you are also suffering from endema [water retention] ,,

Have you checked you antibiotic tablets on google and the side effects, yes ive suffered the same, to the point where a 10 mtr walk would finish me, legs so heavy, im suffering a bit now and sleep with a steel framed sun lounger with one leg folded away, so its a gentle slope which my legs dont role off,

There can be many complications with broad spectrum antibiotics, in fact, as much as i hated it, i needed a narrow spectrum AB to put my stomach flora back in order, which it thankfully did,

Can only take non Penicillin antibiotics...........

Feet and ankle swelling has now gone.......... after floods could not buy Aspirin, [ then they were/are a band over the counter Drug in Thailand] a different brand came out, which I have been taking for over a year.... Never connected the 2....... web research + talking to a Dr = now can get Aspirin from Dr, 5 weeks now with NO swelling + no pillows under feet in bed..

I seem to have issed the initial reference to swollen feet and needing extra pillows to sleep and can't find them in the earlier parts of this thread.

If present, past or future, likely point to a medical problem unrelated to the dental one and warrant seeing a doctor/getting a thorough ohysical check up inclus=ding a stress test as this is often an indication of a heart problem.

#7 sort of about pillow under head, said I had more under feet.......... No swollen feet and Dentist are not retailed

Few weeks ago was a Thread about DVT......... over 35 years ago had big problems, my Dr said I had it and to take 1x Aspirin per day for life, helps thin the blood.. Just never connected the new over the counter Thai Aspirin not working the same, only after reading this Thread on DVT did I question this with my Dr = I have the correct Aspirin again and all the swelling for well over a year has gone......... so something must work, as I come to accept it as feet getting worse, as lost a lot of feeling in them years ago.. Baking Soda is amazing for healthy gums.

I have had off and on issues with my teeth and after extensive reading and research discovered most issues with teeth starts because of unhealthy gums. There are many articles connecting this if you do some googling "baking soda for healthy gums teeth" etc. I also keep handy a bottle of water with some BS disolved in it and gargle on occasion. Fresh and clean mouth and teeth.

I brush my teeth and gums daily now with baking soda, very lightly on the teeth tho as BS can be abraisive and hard on tooth enamal. The alternative is to just rub the BS on the gums and tongue which my Thai gf does, and she is amazed at how much gunk she spits out after and how fresh her mouth is. Healthy gums make for healthy teeth. Read some of the articles at the link above then give it a try, you will likely be amazed.

Baking soda is also an excellent underarm cleaner. Wet a facecloth, mash up some baking soda and rub into your underarms, leave for a minute or two and presto - clean and odor fresh for days. Underarm deodorants mostly block the pores which need to operate freely to cleanse the body. Block the pores and toxins remain in the body to create all kinds of havic over time. Baking soda kills (neutralizes) the bacteria which causes odor. Ever wonder why people put baking soda in their fridge to remove odors - think about it. It works!

Good luck!

Doug, this sounds interesting and I am wondering where to buy some. Is it labeled in English at the supermarkets in Thailand under the name baking Soda?

Thanks

It is, though label may say "bicarbonate of soda" rather than baking soda. May be found near yeast and baking powder in the baking goods section.
