Dutch tourist in Chiang Mai reports forcible sexual assault from 2 Caucasian men

A 23-year-old Dutch tourist notified Chiang Mai police she was gang raped by three Caucasians. She had consensual sex with one man after drinking with him in a bar. But later his two friends wanted to join in, so the two men had forcible sex with her despite her protests and resistance.

CHIANG MAI – February 25, 2013 [PDN]; a report of a tourist being gang raped by three foreigners was received by Chiang Mai police. The victim was identified as “Ms. Collina” (alias), 23 years old, a Dutch tourist. She told police that she got raped by a Caucasian and his two friends, who left her in the hotel room afterwards.

Ms. Collina testified that she had come to travel in the north of Thailand. On the night of Feb 24, she was drinking in a bar on Loykroh road. Then a foreign man, “Mr. Thomas,” came along and asked to drink with her, until she got drunk. Then Mr. Thomas took her to a guest house in the Rakang road area, where they had sexual intercourse.

Afterwards, two friends of Mr. Thomas came in, and they asked to join in the sex. Ms. Collina tried to protest, but because she was drunk and they were three men, she could not fight them. So she got gang raped and then she passed out. When she woke up, she was naked and the three men had left. When she asked the guest house staff, they told her that the men had left at 8 o’clock.

After receiving the victim’s rape complaint, Chiang Mai police officers co-operated with the tourism police to find the clues to locate Mr. Thomas and his friends. Officers will ask to inspect the guesthouse CCTVs, and believe the suspects are still in the Chiang Mai area.

I missed the part in the article about how long the women was raped, how many times the women was raped, what time the other men arrived at the hotel or that the men slept.

Your last sentence pretty much does indicate that you feel this woman was not raped. You may not mean it to, but that's how it could be read.

Yes, the young lady did a dumb thing in being intoxicated on her own in a country
strange to her and then going off to a guest house with a stranger. However,
rape is rape and even worse when the victim is incapacitated with liquor or
drugs and is not able to make logical choices or properly defend herself.

Anyone who takes advantage of a person in such a condition is lower than scum
and should be charged to the fullest extent of the law. It's no different than
having sex with a mentally challanged person or a disabled woman in a
wheelchair. When in that condition they cannot defend them self.

I only hope the guest house has a copy of Mr. Thomas's passport and that the cops
find him and his phone that he texted his buddies on so they can be identified as
well. We need to send a message to these tourists or whatever that they will be
held responsible for their actions while in our city.

What is pretty sad about this story isn't just what happened to the girl, but that foreigners are coming to Thailand to commit these kind of crimes, which is a very sad turn of events. Also westerners are very easy to track down, due to their light skin, light hair and big noses.

Normally Thailand is still considered to be a very safe country and I have encountered no problems. I have met some very nice foreigners in Thailand, but I think your average female foreign tourist should not only be wary of associating with the wrong crowd when it comes to local men, but even other foreigners. Anytime someone drinks until they are drunk, especially in the company of strangers, there will be problems. Usually these young naive people, especially girls get drunk in foreign countries because they are having the time of their lives and they don't think about the consequences. Personally I'd rather enjoy the company of interesting people that I can become good friends with over a beer, but getting drunk, especially amongst strangers is a sign you are 1) stupid and 2) the conversation must be seriously bad and the people you are with are probably very boring because otherwise you'd be more focused on getting to know the people around you than putting yourself into danger.
