For how long is an income affidavit from the embassy valid?

Is that validity the same for all immigration offices, or do they each have their own set of rules?

"all places might not be the same, some want same day date"

I think you're thinking of the bank letter.

I was told I can use one 'the same year'.

Didn't inquire if that was extension or calendar year.

Haven't had a problem with it being 4 or 5 months old.

The acceptable age of the letter seems to vary by office. For example, here in CM where it's fairly easy to get letters from the various consulates and honorary consulates, the rule seems to be that the letter can't be more than one month old.

For example, if you're doing the "two step" process to go from visa exempt entry to 90-day O visa and then to 12 month extension due to retirement, you need two fresh letters. You certainly can't make a copy of the letter used for the conversion and submit that when you request the extension. Nor would they accept two original letters, both obtained at the time you normally would obtain the first letter. I guess someone might want to do this to save having to make two trips to a consulate, but no you have to go twice and pay twice.

I've heard other provinces will accept older letters for 12 month marriage and retirement extensions.

You know this for a fact? Suspect if it is the reason is more than one month rather than being two originals. I have seen reports elsewhere of it being accepted and Consulates offer this service so suspect they also know it can be.
