On my Fiesta i have the Continental Premium Contact 2 tyres.

It will be time to replace them soon, are there any better options available? I would most value comfort (softer ride , less noise).

50 series of a 195 tyre means a hight of only 9,75 cm.

There is your comfort problem not the brand.

Maybe some of them have a lesser noise production then the other.

Change to 15 inch and you get a higher wall on the tyre.

Or change the hight from the tyres only , like a 195/55 or 60 serie

It means your speedometer will probably show you a slightly lower speed then the reality.

Your car come a very little higher to and the fuel use most of the time doesn t change with this.

Thanks, I didn't know that. So in your opinion the best would be to change to 15"? Would that have any impact on the performance of the car in other areas?

With 15 inch wheels they calculate the right diameter of the combination in every decent tyre and wheel centre easy for you.

If the car is really designed for 16 inch[because its a Ford Fiesta I don t believe in this] and higher only then the breakcaliper will not fit you need a space there between inside wheel and breakcaliper of 1 cm or more.

Its a matter of trying it out and messure the space.

If it don t fit you can always go for changing only the tyres wich is cheaper to

I'm pretty sure 15" will fit fine with the stock calipers. There's usually bags of space and reducing the wheel one inch won't make a difference. Reducing the wheel 1 inches should increase fuel economy slightly, but widening the tire/wheel would reduce it (greater rolling resistance). Skinny tires use less fuel but are poorer for handling/braking.

The lower spec Fiesta's use 185/55 R15 tyres. So 15 inch wheels with similar width and offset to the OEM wheel should fit.

As a general rule and for the same tyre type, ride improves with lower inflation pressure, and higher profile (taller sidewalls). Handling and steering precision tend to go the opposite way. Changing to 15 inch wheels with higher profile tyres might make a small improvement in ride with the right tyres. The alternate OEM 185/55 R15 tyres have a sidewall height of about 10cm. These are smaller diameter, narrower and the sidewall is only about 0.25 cm more than the original 195/50 R16 tyres. 195/55 R15 (10.7 cm sidewall), or 185/60 R15 (11.1 cm sidewall) should give better ride.

For a given tyre size, there are different tyre types with different characteristics. E.G. performance, wet weather, wear life, comfort. Some soft compound, performance tyres can ride surprising well compared to longer wearing, harder compound tyres but the cost of replacement is higher and tyre life shorter. Not all tyres are available in all sizes, e.g. The Yokohama AdvanDB Culicine suggested above look good but the closest size for the Fiesta is 195/55 R15.

Tyre shops can suggest alternatives and web site reviews, (e.g. TireRack and 1010tires) can be useful comparing tyre performance and comfort. Yokohama have a nice summary of their range at http://www.yokohamathailand.com/images/Product-Line.jpg

What ever tyre is selected, if the car is not used for high speed, heavy loads or aggressive driving, the inflation pressure at the lower end of the range recommended by Ford would give the smoothest ride.

Comparing them we can make the following calculation.

16 inch with a 195/50 has a total diameter of the wheel and tyre combination 16x2,54 cm = 40,64 cm +2 x 9,75= 60,14 cm

Considering this is original size for the car with a 15 inch wheel you need.

15x2,54 cm =38,1 cm 60,14 - 38,1=22,01: 2 = 11,01 cm there is your ideal tyrewall height you need with a 15 inch wheel

Only it does not excist

Choosing a widness for the tyre of 195 cm again the 195/55 comes closest with 10,7 cm height ,personally I would choose a 60 serie

This will give a tyrewall height of 11,7 cm.

In percentage your speedometer will give a slightly lower rating of 98 procent of the original with 195/60

With 195/55 your rating on the speedometer wil be slightly higher 100,7 procent.of the original.

I don t believe in a differents for the fuel consumption for any of the combinations.

NASCAR Race Cars run on 15 Inchers..Bit wider though, and they are slightly faster than a Ford Disasta.cheesy.gif .

And your point is?

Most ''street'' drag race rides are 15 inch. thumbsup.gif
