Sending Stuff Back Home

Recommended Posts

Well, after 5 years here I have to move back to the states. I'm wondering whats the cheapest way to send my stuff back to the states (boat maybe?). Is it more cost effective just to sell my things here and buy again? I pretty much accumulated all the normal household items, furniture, iMac, etc... Or maybe just ship some things? Anyone suggestions appreciated and if anyone has any recommendations for shipping companies please let me know.

In many if not most cases, the cost of replacing is .better and certainly less hassle than shipping and the hoops you have to jump through.

Look at what you have, be.realistic at what you would get if you sold it weigh that against cost of new, if the gap is smaller than cost to ship you have the answer.

i know the cost of a 60' shipping container to the east coast(NC) cost $2000.00us

Thanks, Happy do you have the name and number of the company you used and when it arrives in the states are you responsible for unloading and transporting from the port?

I left BKK to take a job in Japan. We sold our furniture (didn't have much, cuz the apartment came furnished). The smaller items, we just boxed up and shipped by air freight to Hiroshima. Not mail, but used a freight forwarder. Picked it up at the Hiroshima airport about 5 days later. It was very cheap, under $200 for about 10 boxes.

One mistake... We should have declared all this stuff as Unaccompanied Baggage (UB). There is a box you can check on your customs form when you arrive. Since we didn't check this box, we would have had to pay duty on all our stuff. Japanese being what they are, very courteous & helpful, they directed us to an office where we filled out the right paperwork to fix the mistake, and we paid no duty.

The fun part was then we were escorted into the secure customs holding area where all our boxes were meticulously unpacked & inspected. We were warned repeatedly about claiming any contraband, which we didn't. They were nice enough to overlook some obviously pirated Nintendo games. So nice to deal with professionals who aren't looking for tea money.

Bretth7377!!

Stay away from this information. I do not know if this guy is for real or a troll.... There is NO container EVER that is 60´to my knowledge, I have been working in shipping up til today since 1967. That weightlimition he mention is just out of the ballpark 90.000 lbs which is eq. to someting like 45 tons....... There is no containervehicle ever that can carry that kind of load....

if you are interested in suggestions you can PM me and mention at the very same time both loadingplace with postcode here in Thailand, as well as what kind of service you need to have in the US.. mention also there areacode as well as name of city o town.
