Big Market Near Cambodia Border

Recommended Posts

Hi last time i was in Buriram the missus took me to a big market , from memory took about 3 hours drive from there to the market.

The road going to the market ended in a long road that seemed to go on forever, she said the market was very close to the cambodian border.

Couple of questions, how much further is the border from the market and where would this border bring you at in cambodia. I was looking to have a skeet at the angkor wat when im next over.

Thanks in advance.

Could be Aran or Chong Chom.

Either could see you over in to Cambodia in a very short distance, but Siem Reap is then another two to three hours.

Sounds like the Chaidaeng Chongchom Market in Prasat. It is very close to the border and they have a big casino and other similar venues on the Cambodian side just across the border.

3 hours from Buriram it must be Aranyapatet (unless he has a crap carsmile.png ).

Chong Chom is only an hour and half away and I am sure he would have mentioned the bicycles.

A skeet to Angkor Wat is no problem - I believe a couple of guys in Prakhonchai arrange 3 or 4 day trips to Siem Reap thumbsup.gif

It's Chong Chom and it's about 15 kilometers from our house about a 25 minute drive, great market, gret selection of wares too but avoid it on public holidays, the traffic is horrendous then.

As said it is actually about 3 kilometers from the Thai Kampuchea border so if you were to combine a market day with a visa run you could have a great time, and an empty wallet too.

No it isn't !

Chong Chom isn't big and it isn't 3 hours from Buriram. Frankly, the Cambodian jungle market through Ban Kruat is far more interesting (no bicycles though).

Aranyapatet fits the description.

If you thought Chong Chom was big, go to Aranyapatet.

There is no nightlife as far as I am aware at Chong Chom - there is the casino over the border and a few shops/stalls. There is a karaoke in Kap Choeng next to Dave's M & D coffee shop.

Chong Chom Market is 9 km from where I live. The border crossing is only 1.5 km further. The border crossing is used for border hopes and to get a taxi to Seim Reap (2000 baht),new black top road about 2 hours, I have done it. Immigration for your area is in Kap Choeng 10 Km back up the 214 highway. If your looking for night life you need to go back to Pattaya.

PM me for further info.

To be fair, there are some bars in Prasat - and both Buriram and Surin have a Tawan Daeng wai.gif

O'smach ( Chong chom border ) was great when it first opened but now it's a shit hole full of overpriced ( if your farang) brothels and crap merchandise from china, not even worth an hour of your time

35 km from o'smach though is the delightful town of Samrong, there's supposed to be a bus there but everyone tells you there isn't but a motor bike taxi will take you for 250 baht , there's not much there after dark nightlife wise but it's a touch of real Cambodia, nothing like the crappy ripp off infestered border

If you are going to Cambodia from Meuang Sisaket with a view to going to Siem Reap, Taqila, then Choam Sa Ngam/Anlong Veng is the border for you. There is plenty of info on access to/form//through this border-crossing from me and others if you Google for example "Santisuk Choam Sa Ngam Thaivisa". The key points are:

Small rustic border - no big market like at Chong Jom/O'Smach

Poor public transport links on the Thai side (but possible for a real traveller with time)

About 100 minutes and $50 taxi ride from the border to Siem Reap

Approximately 3 km past O'Smach on the left hand side of the highway there is an animal hospital staffed by Vietnamese specialist. whistling.gif

brothels? on thai side?

Broth a stew like Tom yang kung sort of thing.

Why do you want a soup or stew kitchen?

Broth has been made for many years using the animal bones which, traditionally, are boiled in a cooking pot for long periods to extract the flavor and nutrients. The bones may or may not have meat still on them.
