webfact
Thailand to unveil new Bt20 banknotes April 1By Digital MediaBANGKOK, March 28 – Thailand’s new Bt20 banknotes will be released into the market on April 1, gradually replacing the present note design which has been in circulation for over a decade, a Bank of Thailand (BoT) deputy governor said.Thong-urai Limpiti said the design of the new Bt20 banknote will be modern and universal with the use of specialised technology to prevent counterfeiting and enable visually-impaired people to differentiate them from counterfeit ones. The new design includes two green flowers representing Number 2 in Braille characters, she said. She said the new banknote will have a portrait of King Ramkhamhaeng as a tribute to the great Siamese monarch while the colour and size are similar to the present notes.Ms Thong-urai said 1.4 billion Bt20 banknotes are in circulation out of a total four billion banknotes in the system. The first batch of 200 million Bt20 banknotes will be released with the objective of substituting the current ones within a year. The BoT distributed newly-designed Bt50 banknotes into the market last year, followed by Bt20 notes this year, she said, adding that banknotes of the two denominations are changed without affecting the money circulation system since they are not used in ATM machines. webfact
New 20-baht banknotes to have a more 'global' design and new anti-forgery featuresBANGKOK, 28 March 2013 (NNT) – The Bank of Thailand will start circulating new 20-baht banknotes on 1 April. The new 20 baht bills will maintain the same size and color as the current bills, but the graphics have been revamped to have a more modern and global look. New anti-counterfeit techniques have also been implemented, which will allow the visual-impaired to more easily identify the bills. Note counters and machines that receive cash will also work better with the new bills. The number 20, written in Thai numerals, is transparent on the bill and this attribute can be easily checked by shining light onto the bill. Green-color stripes embedded in the bill will show on the backside of the note, and they can change color from green to purple-red. Embossing is present on the note to allow identification by touch. An image of two dark-green flowers on the note will also help the visually-impaired to tell the note apart.-- NNT 2013-03-

hkt83100
A friend of mine accidentally put a new 500 Baht note in the washing machine at 90°. After pre- and mainwash cycle the note was very clean and the shiny silvery control mark - the wide strip - was completely gone and it was just white paper. The smaller interrupted strip was still there.

R10wota
Are they planning to "Unveil" the Note that is already published in the media? "Unveil" ? Really? - that was for the News Reporter.... The note looks better though....
Locationthailand
Was this necessary or just a way to shift an few extra printed pieces of paper into circulation? It is after all, only paper (or composite material) and has no worth. Sadly the fiat system - alive and well where people think paper has value.
Westaurel
Nice ! Finally, they decided to actualize the King picture, he looks great, better picture quality on this new note, the most used note in Isan with 100 baht. Front The portrait of King Rama IX in the Royal House of Chakri gownBack The images of the royal statue of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great seated on the Manangkhasila Asana Throne, the invention of the Thai script, the Ramkhamhaeng stele, ancient Thai script Lai Sue Thai, the grievance hearing, the Bell of King Ramkhamhaeng, and Sangkhalok Wares. About one change a year. Last year in January it was the 50 baht note, this year the 20 baht and next year 100 baht ? Glad to see the 1000 baht note... Just surprised they didn't add the large hologram on the left side as on the new 1000 baht note ! Edited March 28, 2013 by Westaurel

ratcatcher
It's still difficult to take Thai money seriously when all the colors match Monopoly money. Interesting comment. The most recognized and accepted currency in the world is still the United States dollar, however, you must admit it is rather a bland design in comparison to most other currencies. At least the Thai notes vary in size so a blind person can feel what the note is, after practice.

When I was a boy there was a blind guy in the nearest town that had a small market. You could give him a dollar bill, five dollar bill or ten dollar bill and he would rub the bill and give you the correct change. Never figured out how he knew. Popular Post Rancid
It's still difficult to take Thai money seriously when all the colors match Monopoly money. This has got to be an American comment. What irony when they let loose with these mononopoly comments about a color system that is easier to identify denominations when their own currency is called a Federal Reserve Note, printed by a private company owned by the crooked banksters! So which is the real monopoly money?

This is clearly a joke, and not a very funny one because they should actually be unveiling a 5,000 baht note. You can't buy anything with a 20-baht note any more, but there are always dozens of dirty torn ones in your pocket, so they should be withdrawn. On the other hand, try going out to a half-decent restaurant in Bangkok these days and getting change from a 1,000 note on dinner for 2. This is why a 5,000 baht and, yes, even a 10,000 baht note are necessary these days. The highest denomination note in Thailand at the moment is worth only £22, which is a joke in itself.
