Is Hyundai Making Sense In Thailand ?

Featured Replies

I just returned from Impact Muang Thong Thani.

The entry level Hyundai Elantra is going for 899,999, with a special discount of 100,000. Now at 799,999 for a manual gear Hyundai, the car is more expensive than Honda Civic.

Hyundai cars are definitely not cheap in Thailand.

Amusing you would think an import to be cheaper than something locally produced.

Lost Me somewhere !!. A top end City aint much different than a base Civic. When you Buy a ride is it etched in stone.?. Try it , Dont Like It, Change It....... Unless of course you maxed out last month out on

The Wifes Choise.

At least the Hyundai Veloster look not so ugly, as the local built cars. Veloster would be my consideration.

There are a number of other imported brands, from China and Malaysia. By and large, they are cheaper than the locally produced big brands like Honda and Toyota.

The much talk-about Lotus-inspirted Proton Preve seems missing from Impact.

Hyundai have come a long way. Bit pricey however in Thailand. In Australia I have been driving an i30 lately which is pretty similar I believe to a Thai Elantra. The standard model, auto with cruise control, trip computer, parking sensor etc. sells for about $22,000 there (673k baht), so at that price it's good value, not a bad drive, comfortable and economical. Anyone who went for a drive with me only had good things to say about the ride quality and looks. About the same price as a Fiesta retails in Thailand and I'd go for the larger Hyundai if they could sell them for the Australian price. Once it starts being priced around 800k then it might also be worth looking at a Ford Focus, one of it's main competitors in the Australian market.

Doesn't Hyundai come with a much better warrantee too? Here in the states they have a 5 year 100,000 mile best in class warrantee.

You forgot to mention the Indians. Not sure if the North koreans have cars also,

I bought a Hyundai Getz for the daughter a few years ago. Was a good little car but underpowered considering it had a 1.6L 4 cylinder engine. And the fuel consumption was more like a 2.0L car. personally I wouldn't pay a premium to own one here.

I hired a getz for a day (to get to the airport mainly), on the Gold Coast. Horrible little buzzy 1.3 L engine. Very slow even with MT. My current swift beats it's pants off:)

Most of 1600 engines are underpowered, because cars getting heavier. A Mini Cooper weights already 1500kg with all the air bags and electronic wirings and safety standards. A 76' VW Golf GTI was only just half of that. Asian Consumers today worry so much about the fuel consumption of a car, that they buy only the smallest engine. But they dont realize that a underpowered 1500 engine uses more power as a 2 liter engine, because it have to be floored all times.

Suzuki Swift the King of small cars!

That's what I bought my daughter to replace the Getz! Well, I have a beautiful grand daughter and I liked the idea of 7 airbags, ABS, ESP and all the other stuff when she is in the car.

Your current swift manufactured in same year as the Getz?Or the latest model?A fair comparison would be to compare both makes manufactured in the same year..IMO..

Not really comparable in out market though, as we don't get the getz here. I'm happy to hear its a marked improvement over earlier models. Looking at the motor show, the hyundai have some great looking cars now, but they are not priced competitively against the uninspiring altises and civics that litter the roads. This market sure needs some more competition.

Yes, I know it's been replaced by the i20. The day we went car shopping we never considered it. We looked at small cars from Holden, Honda, Mitsubishi, Ford, Kia and Suzuki.

The Swift is a great little car......plus my daughter liked it. That's all that matters.

indeed its overpriced here but that does not cover the fact they still extremely reliable and safe. look at the proper euro ncap crash test of elantra, and compare it to civic, accord, vios, camry, focus. they are similar if not better in certain offsets isnt it

and jeez . . the getz in question is the first gen. it is actually still a very decent budget car. look at the higher range civic ek9 during the similar time. you probably dont wanna be in that in an accident

In Thailand they have not 7 airbags. Only 2

Back in the day the most fuel efficient Mk1 Escort was the RS2000 if driven conservatively. Certainly better than the 1600 Mexico, and even better than the 1300 Sport. Power to weight ratio is sometimes a factor as has been noted.

I agree they are not priced competively due to they are imported in from Korea into LOS. Altises and Civics are locally assembled so they are being spared of the import taxes which gives them the price advantage!
