Thailand To Change From Left To Right Hand Driving

Featured Replies

So, because its an inconvenience for the TOURISTA, the locals must "adapt?" Insane.

I'm from the USA and we drive on the right side of the road, so this should make me happy, right? (no pun intended)

Its sheer lunacy. If tourists cannot adapt, then too bad.

"However busses, trucks and taxis will be exempted as they are driven by professional drivers who can handle their vehicle safely."

That is one of the better jokes in the article!!!

Which hand for digging boogers?

Brilliant idea!

The problem is that in most countries where people drive on the right, cars have steering wheels on the left so they can have a better view for seeing oncoming traffic (ie overtaking).

Since overtaking is already one of the weak points of Thai drivers, we can now look forward to a drastic increase in accidents because now we will all have to move that much further into oncoming traffic to see the view ahead !!!

Another classic example of trying to implement something before thinking it through.

Given the fact that driving is currently dangerous, can you imagine what it will be like if this gets passed? When Im in Bangkok, Ill travel by boat and canal.

The last country to change was, I believe, Sweden in the late 60s.

Italy changed between the wars, and in typical Italian fashion, changed gradually. Cities with trams were allowed to continue driving on the left (Rome was one) provided they posted signs at the city limits.

Samoa changed in 2009 from right to left side driving - to be into line with other South Pacific countries ;-P

George...marks out of 10 for this one.. 6/10....nice try but no cigar

LOL I wonder how many will get sucked in with this April Fools joke.

I suggest that you read your article again, paying attention to your left and right , the whole article is totally contradictory as to who drives on what side and infact what side you are now and will be driving on.

For a small fee i will proof read all of your future articles so as to put them in easy to read english

cheers

Someone elses, apparently.

I have seen more nostril diving than I care to have ever experienced.

"However busses, trucks and taxis will be exempted as they are driven by professional drivers who can handle their vehicle safely" - uh huh, lol

This HAS TO be an April Fools post, no way in hell can this be serious!

Does anyone realize that today is April 1st? laugh.png

Someone's changing from left to right handed .... but it's got nothing to do with driving.

Nobody notice what todays date is?

This is a step in the right direction, as we all know ,Thai have a problem deciding which is right and which is wrong, so they can now sit in the middle , like most do anyway, Mr matchamoron should be congratulated on such a splendid idea , however I would have preferred red and yellow paint , but, Ah ya can't have everything.clap2.gif

oh dear....when you did your journalism course did you miss the day when humour was discussed ?

Per 1 January 2020 all cars in Thailand, including old cars, must be refitted. However busses, trucks and taxis will be exempted as they are driven by professional drivers who can handle their vehicle safely.

Would make sense with buses as they stop in the middle or in the fast lane now anyway, so if there was a change at least the passengers could get out at the side of the road even if it is the middle edge.. giggle.gif

This was inevitable but it does make sense for a number of reasons..., peripheral visibility being the biggest. Eye mapping tests over the years verify this.

The thing that scares me is...., the transition!! I'd like to see someone set up a study to document the # of accidents that occur over a 5 year period, once enacted. Not just the accidents but assessing the accident cause in as granular a fashion possible. Empirical data from crash scene..., accounts from witnesses and those involved (if they live to tell!)..., and then to view contributing factors relative to the change from left to right.

Although most of us have figured out what this article is about... It actually makes perfect sense. Burma changed in the 70's. Only a few countries left to convert...

I've already started to modify my car. Got the steering wheel on the left side, don't know how to change the pedals.

How can people believe such a story on a special day for fools?--clap2.gif

You guys do realize today's date is April 1, don't you?

Nice try though tongue.png

I must admit that this 1 April story certainly trolled up far more muppet seriousness than I expected!
