Google Search Enigma

I have an annoying problem with Google search using the latest version of Firefox. When I type in what I want to seach for in th bar, I only manage to get the first letter typed when the page turns white and I get up in the top left hand side you only get suggestions and you can't go any further. See the attached screen captures. My operating system is Windows 7 Utimate SP1 32-bit and the Firefox version is 20.0.

Looks like a change in Google itself as it does the same thing in Firefox, Chrome and IE 9. So not related to FF specifically but to Google.
