I did a lot of research about two years ago for travel insurance and compared them and many others. IMO and backed by other comparison websites and feedback sites, they ranked lower against many others, based on ability to claim, benefits, service, feedback etcetera.

I ended up choosing a different Australian based company

Thanks for the reply, can you tell which company you chose and why?

*(looking back, the first one i took was 3 years back , not 2 as a I originally said)

I was personally concerned with 2 main things. Medical/hospital coverage (it had to be a large amount, including repatriation costs back to OZ if needed) and the cover also had to include motorcycles. As I don't have a motorcycle license in OZ, the insurance would need to cover an accident using a motorcycle, with me having a International Drivers Permit. I also weighed up customer service and feedback and other things they covered, reading the fine print on many of the policies excluded them

The first few times I chose GIO. Their excess was reasonable, they covered amounts for medical that were appropriate and they had a 24 hour help line. I had my passport stolen on one visit and they were very helpful. I was reimbursed approx $500 ( I forget the exact amount) for expenses of replacement and was charges zero excess.

The most recent one I took is with Covermore, which is for multi entry visits for 12 months. I took that because it was cheaper, but still covered everything I needed. I spoke to them on the phone regarding the motorcycle coverage and was told I would be covered under the scenario I have given.

Sorry, but this is not possible. If you don't have a motorbike license, you van not have an IDP that covers motorbikes, since IDP's are not valid without the home license.

So you'll always be driving without license, which can invalidate any insurance, no matter what they told you.

Been buying travel insurance for over 35 years and never made a claim, but now that i have a pre-existing medical condition they ask for more money than the airline ticket cost or accept that you are not covered for related medical. So yes i am covered if i loose my luggage ( if i pay the $500 excess ) but no i am not covered if i have a heart attack. I guess that is business and protecting the shareholder's interests, of which i am one, being a shareholder in one of the larger players . It gets inconvienant and damm expensive to get old and yet , stupidly, i was planing to get older still . I think it was Nomads that won't even offer you an exorbinent premium once you reach mid sixties.

I am with World Nomads - for now. Was recomended by a friends that used to work at the Aus embassy and told of hooro stories of other sompanies that won't actually do anything. Apparently they have a good underwriter (Lloyds?) - check who covers them.

I got sick and ended up in Samitivej and they covered it all no problem - via the insurance dept at the hospital as I was out of it.

They were cheap before but have removed the option to include my child for free on my policy so in effect my premiums will more than double so will be looking elsewhere.

Good luck

I've used Worldcare part of the Mondial network over the last five years while I've been working in Thailand but travelling outside Thailand; last trip insured wife, myself and two kids for a seven week holiday in The Philippines for just short of 8,000 THB. I was hospitalised for the first time ever during this trip and made a claim also for the very first time. I paid up front to the hospital with my own funds and claimed back from the company - a claim for about 90,000 THB. They paid out with the only issues being they were not hugely responsive at the time I was hospitalised; I would have had considerably more peace of mind had I known they were going to pay. But they did on production of claim with receipts, so mustn't grumble and I was relieved when the funds hit my bank account. Can also apply on line.

This is correct.

An International Drivers License only covers the current licenses one holds in their own country.

You cant come to Thailand with an IDL for a car , and drive a truck and motorcycle as well.

If you wish to be insured against motorcycle accidents in which you are driving , you need to acquire a license for motorcycles in that country you are holidaying in.

Im with World Nomads, mainly because they have no "90 day max. stay in one country" clause like may other insurers.

Anyone shopping around, particularly long stayers should look out for these 2 clauses ( m/cycle and length of stay)

Their price was competitive , and actually dropped this year.

I also understand WN covers more of the sporting risks than most others. Things like waterski ing and jetski

Two others for people to look at for long term travel insurance are World Wide Insurance and DU Insure.

I was with WW for a couple of years but as not really going back to the UK they could not renew. Then had DU for 18 months until last month - maximum length of cover in one go is 18 months up to a certain age and have now just taken out cover with WN - about the only one left to me. From memory DU cover was higher and they also covered a lot of the sporting risks.

With both I was able to take out the cover without actually being back in the UK and with WN they did not need me to have been UK resident for 6 months prior.

I took out a years coverage with Nomads a couple of years ago. Price was reasonable, and, as someone else stated they were underwritten by Lloyds and overall I was happy with what they offered.

I didn't try for coverage for motorbikes in Thailand or other extreme sports.

Never claimed so can't comment on this aspect.

I'm self insured now as they all seem to want to give nothing in exchange for high premiums.

Existing or chronic conditions are excluded by all.
