Popular Post manfrommanteo
The bill was bs...in America you have background checks regardless of where you buy a gun legally. Criminals don't follow the laws, don't do background checks. Eric Holder is guilty of running guns illegally to Mexico, and should be arrested. This bill was nothing more than an attempt to control the population by an elitest, statist government. That's not a statement against Democrats alone, the Republicans are just as guilty. America is in trouble, it's freedoms eroding daily, and the sheep lining up mindlessly. Obama lied in his press conference, 90% of Americans don't agree with this bill. To buy a gun online requires it to be shipped to a federally registred gun dealer, who then runs an FBI check on you before he allows you to take the gun home. Gun shows the same way. It's the mindless sheeple who fall for the lies that Obama, Bush and their kind spew.

Popular Post Jingthing
The U.S. government has become dysfunctional mostly due to republican/right wing obstructionism. The elected officials are supposed to reflect the will of the people. The VAST MAJORITY of Americans were for this reform but it lost almost entirely due to the power of a radical right wing fringe group -- the notorious NRA. Obama needs to bring this fight to the PEOPLE. The legislature is USELESS. The only silver lining is that this sets up a major pro Obama shakeup in the next midterm elections. I would imagine that the senators are well aware of public opinion, especially considering that next year is a mid-term election for some, so would be very mindful of reflecting public opinion if they wished to retain their seats. What really annoys you is that the Senate did not vote the way you wanted it to, that's democracy for you, and having read some of your other posts on other topics, I don't think that you are representative of the majority of the American population.

This bill, and the rhetoric surrounding it, was designed to play on people's emotions through manipulating perceptions and misrepresenting facts. When a population is ignorant they are easy to control.

There is no point in Obama even trying to play nice. Despite concerns about how information on gun owners might be used, 91 percent of registered voters support universal background checks, according to a new poll released on Thursday. From their website: The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research. Four of those States appear to have an anti-gun ownership tendency, if their politicians are representative, so the results are definetly skewed. If the same questions had been asked in Arizona, Alabama, Texas, Montana, Alaska etc I am sure the reluts would have been different. All opinion polls tend to be unreliable, as one get the answer that one wants to hear by phrasing the questions accordingly, and asking at certain times of the day, and venues. Probably the Senate vote was fairly representative of the actuals voters beliefs, which really irks some people who only want democracy if it fits their own ideas. No it wasn't. Nobody credible believes that. Talking here only about the BACKGROUND CHECKS. That was massively popular and remains so among the voters. It is not allowed to alter an article you are quoting. The fact remains there are at least six items more important than gun control on the minds of the people. Popular Post kamahele
Do not believe those who are posting on this site that all gun sales already require a background check or that this bill was not popular with an overwhelming percentage of the American Public which includes gun owners. Local laws in some states do require you show a driver's license at gun shows but as recent investigations have shown, they don't even do that. You haggle the price and you walk out with a gun and ammunition. The percentage of Americans that Obama has used are actually reinforced by news organizations which have run their own polls. It is now harder for one to buy cough medicine in the USA if it contains Sudafed than it would be to buy a gun at a gun show or online. The NRA which uses the second amendment to hide behind and hoodwink the Americn public does not represent the average gun owner / user but instead represents the gun manufacturers. Politicians voted against this bill both Democrat and Republican(mostly Republican) because they are pussies that are owned by the NRA who can't wipe their own asses without the NRA"s permission. Remember, all guns leave the factory as legal sales. How do they get into the hands of criminals? Through the lax gun ownership laws in America. How do they get to Mexico to commit the slaughters south of our border? Through the lax gun laws in America and with the money to pay for them thanks to America's addiction nose candy.

DocN
It is far more important to deny women their right to decide what happens with their own bodies or to keep gay- people from getting married! There are soooo many more things that more important...like getting "Family Guy" of the air, because some nut- job is making a collage of it. (so much for "taking rights away!). The rest of the world will just sit back and wait, until the next nut-case with a rucksack full of guns walks into a school or a shopping mall and kills 20 to 30 bystanders. I am (fortunately) not cynical enough to hope for the crocodile- tears of all those, whos fantasy- fear of a future Hitler or a future radical government kept Obama (or any other President) from dealing with the very real fear of a today- sicko, blowing up the brains of 5th- graders! Good night America!
Popular Post maidtorngkitmark
Europeans and Americans have very different views on guns in society. Americans believe firearms are necessary to protect oneself against any agressor. Americans don't care to become a victim. How would you protect yourself if the next Charles Manson and gang come to your home? If you don't have superior firepower you will be overtaken, or worse. What group was unharmed during the L.A. riots ? It was those Koreans in Koreatown. They patrolled the tops of the buildings with AK-47s and no riot spread to their neighborhood because everyone knew they were armed to the hilt. Americans cannot agree with sitting and waiting to be shot by someone who takes over a building or tries to enter your home. Americans will take up arms and fight. If more responsible adults had a concealed weapon permit we would stop more assauts before they occur. A criminal does not need a gun to kill. If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. And there will always be outlaws.

zydeco
Forget about guns - the real menace is the pressure cooker. Somewhere, somebody is dreaming of implanting a barcode on every American's forehead. Think of the possibilities. Anyone who ever buys, sells, or trades a pressure cooker, carpenter nails, or a cellphone will have that transaction recorded and the government can then track down the terrorists within minutes. Everybody will be so much safer and happier. I know, because somewhere there is a public opinion poll that will back me up on this.

Popular Post pizzachang
90% ? That is pure bs. The percentages of gun purchases in the US by legal means tells the story. Most are legal and guns shows do not account for the large % of purchases. This year alone, because of the fear of new, restrictive gun laws (aimed at LAW ABIDING CITIZENS) sales of guns & ammo in the US have doubled. All purchased legally with background checks already in place, by regular ole US citizens who did not go out and slaughter any kids or their neighbors. The move by gun-haters is simply another attempt to limit guns and the 'moment' seemed right after the school shooting - which could have been prevented or at worst greatly limited by the simple scanner and personnel like I go through at CM Airport EVERY time I walk in. Attacking the real problem is apparently not on the agenda.
