Whats The The Way To Drive The 1St 1000Km's With A New Diesel Engine?

I just got new cars. Never really thought about it until I read this thread. The manuals say nothing about it, so I don't worry.

But, I think good advice on this forum so far is that if it concerns you, change the oil and filter at 1000 km.. it certainly can't do any harm.

Exactly. thumbsup.gif

Must add if I were a rich guy that changed his ride every year or two I probably wouldn't give a toss, but I am not sooooooo, BUT, I have an affection for the internal combustion engine, similar to my lady sooooooooo. laugh.png

An internal combustion engine is a machine. Even if it is made to higher tolerances these days and parts CNC machined why would you want to flog it in the break in kms?

Drive with some moderation for the first 1000kms.

If its only 200 baht for a owners manual, i dont mind to pay that amount of course. Gladly would pay even more as long i have it in English.

What I would do.

The main thing is getting any crap, and l mean mainly stuff you can't see, out of a new or rebuilt engine, so change the oil and filter after 1000 km, forget what the book says. Engine ''break in''' is a thing of the past now with modern piston ring materials/technology, and bore honing, though am sure minute crap particles will be present. Of course the filter will be doing it's job but. smile.png

Your ride will operate and cruise well under 3000rpm so don't worry. As for foot to the floor stuff, wait till after 1000km oil change. thumbsup.gif

I get a lot of different replies as was expect but all WELL appreciated! Perhaps i should contact a Toyota dealer in my home country and ask them whats the best way to drive the 1st 1k km's.

They will tell what they ''think'' or what their book says. Some of ''us'' here have built race engines reading about technology breakthroughs regarding hardware over the years. If you follow my suggestions your ride will be very happy. smile.png

Thanks again, will just drive like i do now ( below 3000 rpm and don't flat the gas) and when the oil is changed at 1k km's i can have some limited fun with it.

If you get an oil and filter change at 1000km the next one should be at 10,000km despite what the car companies tell you. Remember this: They make most of their profit from selling you parts. So the sooner you start wearing things out the sooner they make the big bucks!

Guess BJS never mentioned using a cheap oil, just a oil and filter change at 1k km and 10k km at the dealer so hopefully they will you a good oil brand :) Next week i ll go to the dealer and will ask which kind of oil they will use standard so AceofPop is happy as well again ;)

Most dealers will give you a choice for pick up diesel engine oil. You can choose either semi synthetic (or mineral / synthetic blend) engine oil with changes at 5,000 km or 100% synthetic oil with changes at 10,000 km.

Thanks again for all the replies. At the moment i have almost 1200km on the clock and had my 1st service check at the dealer. Inthere they even stated thats it wasnt necessarry to change the oil why the saleslady when i picked up my car for the 1st need to change the oil after 1k km.

Anyways, i said, please change it and it was 3.3k as i had 2 options, one of 1.8k or 3.3k. She stated the oil which was in the car already was from the same brand of the one of 3.3k. The newbie as i am with these kind of things i said, please do the same one :)

Even ordered the english manual for the Fortuner, was only 300 baht!

Hope i can enjoy my ''new'' ride a bit more as i not need to hold back anymore ( no worries, only do this on the highway if its possible and sensible :)
