CHIANG MAI: -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's elder sister Yaowapa Wongsawat, who is the Pheu Thai Party candidate for the by-election in Chiang Mai, has officially won the Doi Saket district in Constituency 3.

The election result from three polling stations in Maung Ton Pao municipal district and Nong Kong school showed that No 2 Yaowapa led the other candidates, including No 3 Kingkarn na Chiang Mai of the Democrat Party, No 1 Taveesak Phupha of the Thai Rubber Party, and acting sub-lieutenant Taveep Yodseranee, No 4, from the Cooperative Power Party.

Yaowapa secured 67,101 votes while Kingkarn received 21,372 votes. Taveesak received 2,456 votes and Taveep 977 .

Yaowapa was elated by the result, saying that she had little time for the election campaign. She attributed the victory to Pheu Thai’s national policies.

Bouquets of flowers were presented to the winner, including that of Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung. It was reported that she was invited to a private dinner at Commerce Minister Boonsong Teriyapirom’s residence in Chiang Mai.

Meanwhile, Chiang Mai's election commissioner Praphan Naikowit said his agency had received five complaints. He said even if the investigation into the complaints was not completed within 30 days, he would announce the official election result.

Chiang Mai's election commission director, Suchart Chaiphakdee, said he expected that more than 70 per cent of eligible voters had flocked to the polling station and cast their votes in the by-election. Vote counting was expected to finish by 7pm. A representative from Timor-Leste was an observer.

The by-election in the Constituency 3 follows the resignation of Pheu Thai's Chiang Mai MP Kasem Nimmolrat last month. Yaowapa's decision to run in the by-election after serving her five-year political ban met with heavy criticism, especially from local red shirts who wanted the party to select a candidate by voting instead of opting for a Shinawatra family member.

An independent academic Chamnarn Chanruang previously had said that while Chiang Mai is dominated by the Shinawatra clan, especially Constituency 3 spanning San Kamphaeng, Mae On and Doi Saket, the red shirts were not happy with the move to field Yaowapa. They wanted the candidate to be chosen through voting.

Chamnarn said that though Yaowapa will win, she would getting fewer votes compared to Kasem last year, as many voters will choose to abstain rather than vote for her Democrat rival.

I have always subscribed to the view that everyone has the right to be ugly, and I include myself, but she's just abusing it

Hopefully she may find more time, for attending Parliament unlike her sister, now that she has been elected ?

Or will she perhaps be an absentee-MP, like their brother, the absentee-PM & Big Boss ?

Congratulations Yaowapa on your win, however having said that , may I suggest , you read these pages and learn something and take no notice of your brother in Dubai

Oh well Ms Yingluck, it was nice whilst it lasted. The shopping sprees, international travel to see the world, spending on what you had no understanding of, now it's time to step aside, you have served your purpose and like all Thaksin pawns, you are past your use by date. The future dictatorship of Thailand is looming closer every day. May our beloved king live longer and longer to preserve Thailand from this danger.

Chiang Mai elections will always go to the Shinawatra clan. Its the same as with Suphanburi that will always be controlled by the Silpa-archa family, Buriram by the Newin group, Suthep group in Surat Thani or the Thienthong family in Sa Kaeo.

If she had more important business to go after than campaigning for a prestigious seat in Parliament, then it is fair to assume that she will also not have the time to attend the sessions there.

Interesting remark from the candidate for this Constituency MP seat. Mind you, a 'safe seat' tends to make people somewhat careless towards their constituency, especially when members there keep on asking for democratic involvement in selecting their candidate.

Yes and it is exactly what happens in the United States.

The Kennedy family, the Long family, the Bush family, the Clintons (lately), the Lee family, the Roosevelt family.

Democratic involvement selecting a candidate, good stuff , another reason why Thailand has no Democracy.

Darn...... She Who Must Be Obeyed has won the election, and appears to be on her way to higher things. If she becomes Thaksin clone number four, that is the last straw for me. Makes me feel like I am living in an insane asylum sometimes.. :-( I always felt that Yingluck was in essence just a placeholder until Thaksin could be pardoned and regain the reins of power. But the pardon/amnesty thing is not going well for him, so he needs to re-cement his grip as Yingluck is simply too weak. Yaowapa is perfect for him.

IMO This now makes Yingluck expendable

She either follows her brothers order or she will soon enough be unemployed

I think that is a pretty good sign that people support the government

The minority people of the North not the rest of Thailand.

And do not forget that it was a by-election including San Kamphaeng district (that's where the Shin clan is from). So the result is probably not even representative for Chiang Mai as a whole, let alone Northern Thailand.

I think that is a pretty good sign that people support the government

To be more accurate, it is a sign that ~73% of the people, who bothered to vote, of one electorate, support the government. That the result was pretty much a foregone conclusion, and that this is an electorate of the home town of both the PM and the owner of her political party, and which is being given and promised populist benefits in excess of most of the country, means that it would be risky to extrapolate the result to the rest of the country's voters.

Sorry if that contrasts with your simplistic view.

Yes - very democratic. Candidate imposed, against the wishes of the local party. No time to campaign - because the result was a forgone conclusion. A Shiniwatra will always win in that constituency.

It is a good sign that at least 21,000 people in the area don't subscribe to the BS.

My count was ~25,000 including minor candidates, and that is voters registered in that area who bothered to cast a ballot.

Sadly the poll results inThailand can be likened to red cells and white cells in the blood stream with the white cells representing PTP. The predominance of white cells simply indicates that there is a serious infection which if not treated will lead to the death of this nation.

An IN Channel report on her victory highlighted her comment that she had been too busy to get involved in electioneering. She will fit in nicley in parliament where session after session is cancelled because of a lack of members
