It took some searching to find your nationality (which is important for such a question) so no you will not be eligible for a visa on arrival but will get a 30 day visa exempt entry if airline allows you to board (onward ticket within 30 days might be required).

My girlfriend is Malaysian-Chinese and I'm Austrian. The son is 8 years old and holds a Malaysian passport.

What exactly do you mean by if airline allows me to board?

How does that work for Malaysians?

You did not say where your flight was coming from - likely it will not be an issue from Malaysia but from Europe they normally check if no onward ticket within 30 days and no visa in passport and may require purchase of a ticket. Malaysia passport also get the 30 day visa exempt entry.
