Produce And Meat Market Prices

Featured Replies

I haven't been in Bangkok too long. I hope nobody minds this question, but I have been finding it painful to shop in the market near my apartment in Bangna.

Can we list the prices per kilo of some common items? If I don't ask in the list below, please feel free to add anything you see fit. I know prices will vary on quality and exact species also, but I think we can get a general idea.

I assume at this point that markets don't necessarily beat Tesco/Big C prices. I find that kind of off, is this just the way it is?

Prices I am especially curious about:

Broccoli

Chicken breast

Limes

Potatoes

Basil (these seem to come in little bunches)

Bananas

Carrots

Garlic

Onions

I know the prices of many things, which I did not list. I am obviously just starting to market shop. I see items, with no price of course, I ask.... and the prices at times have seemed REALLY high. I just want a general idea.

PS, I'll keep this thread with an updated list at the end as people add prices.

Thanks!

I live in Chiang Mai, not BKK, but market food should be about the same, I think?

Chicken breast, skinned and no bones, at Rimping, an expensive store here, costs 139 baht a kilo. Probably Big C or Tesco might be less, but not sure. Don't buy any meats at local outdoor markets, but in the past, when I compared, they seemed to the around the same price, yet no refig, or date system, so why bother?

I regularly buy only garlic, cilantro and basil, usually 5 bath for a big "handful" or 10 bath for garlic, the little spicey ones ...a super big handful. Rimping for the same, is 10x for garlic, and 2 or 3 times for the green leafy things.

Broccoli, about 25-30 baht for a normal smaller serving/bunch ...can't remember how much at local street market. Onions, what kind, who knows, not that expensive either way, but could half as much at local street market. Same as garlic, could be 5 times, or could be 2 times as much as herbs, but you are talking about a small amount of money overall ...so it is a savings if you shop at a street market anyway, but not a savings otherwise, if you even have to cross the road to buy.

Mangos and other fruit is quite a savings at the local market, vs a store. Tomatos, great savings at the local market in general and usually great quality at both places. But can be 1/3 of the price at local markets. (Little cherry tomatos seem to be the best.)

You have to find your places, in a local market, who make things you like. Meat can be big problem, the same "meal" can be quite different according to what quality meat they use, for example, for pre-made foods. I have lately been finding meals I like at the local market, and what I do is, substitute some of the ingredients with others, and pass on things I don't like, to my dogs' food. So I add better or more proteins, pick out the shit ingredients, put that in my dogs' food ( I have 6 of them) give them the white rice, mixed with brown, and give myself and daughter brown rice that I cook ...etc. I add the bad oils and coconut milk to dog food, (if you refrig your food, the bad oil ..I think palm oil, but not sure, will congeal on the top and you can pick it out) blah, blah, blah, I probably sound like a crazy person, but I have found some good mix, of deluxe markets, street markets, dog food, my food, which works out pretty well! giggle.gifbah.gifsick.gif For someone! My dogs are surely happier with this than only commercial dog food which sucks in Thailand, or costs more than buying your own cow.
