Hi,

Does anyone know if there is a bus schedule Phuket- Had Yai- Butterworth, Malaysia on line?

Also, to apply for a triple tourist visa, how much time do you have to spend in Penang? Two business days?

Anyone done it recently? Thanks,

sb

I always go to Penang by minibus they take you right through the border without changing.

If you take your visa application in early it will be back afternoon next day.

So, I'm assuming it takes about 12 hours for the run, leave early am, arrive pm? ?

How much was the trip? Was the minibus driver safe? Was it cramped?

Thanks,

The minibus (cramped and with a madman driver) takes about seven hours to Had Yai, then it's 4 hours to Penang. About 350 baht, and 200 baht. Otherwise the public bus ( a more comfortable option) leaves on the half hour from Phuket Bus Station - about 270 baht to Had Yai. I usually stay overnight in Had Yai to break the trip up.

Beware of Malaysian holiddays, the Consulate closes on both Thai and Malaysian holidays.

Hello border gurus!

The condensed version: I am jumping the border to either Malaysia or Laos (preferrably Malaysia) to obtain a visa. I am interested in taking a bus from Krabi to Malaysia next week, does such service exist or must I backtrack to Surrattani? Also, I am concerned as to the safety of travelling through Southern Thailand at this time as a westerner. The newspaper lately has been full of stories of bombings in the area, am I at risk if I go by bus/minibus?

Any advice?

I was on a minivan trip from Ao Nang (Krabi) to koh lanta (don't make that mistake in low season) with a guy who was doing a visa run to KL. He said the bus journey would take 20 hours, and would involve several bus changes. Don't know if that helps or not, but it certainly persuaded me to fly there when I had to do mine! Can't remember how much he said it cost now, but I certainly thought it not worth the saving.
