Litlos
Instead of fraccing lets try ricing. Basically a hole is drilled and unsold rice pushed down. Then squirt a bit of water down hole, the rice expands and problem solved Have to be careful so BKK does not end up higher than Everest though. I see it now the real reason for rice subsidy, lol. Cheers
MarkTudor
Only way is to relocate to a new capital. A lot of land and property owners will object no doubt, but you cannot circumvent around a problem like this, not when 10 to 12 m lives are at stakeO
maidu
What to do? >>> Open a floating shop selling inflatable rafts, all sizes. >>> Market a flood avoidance device, about the size of a mobile phone, with no way to open it up.The army will buy dozens of them, any price. >>> Grow webbed feet.
maidu
seriously though, this is what will happen in the next 20 years. Mark my words: Thai politicians will allocate trillions of baht to try to save Bangkok. They can't not do that, mainly because Bkk is so important to Thainess - its wats, its royal significance, and a thousand other reasons. The power brokers will build ever higher dikes, berms at perimeters, and walls along the Chao Praya and its tributaries. Mega pumps will get put in, and some may actually function. Awhile later, it will become increasingly evident that Mother Nature is more compelling than all efforts and expenditures of men. ....but not before trillions have been spent, and several well placed families become filthy rich in the process.

lungmi
The first thing they need to do is pay some real geologists to come in and confirm the problem. Does anybody have a good reason as to why they NEVER do this (ie bring in outside scientists). They don't like specialist with about 200 years of experience. They kicked out the best engineers from the Netherlands some time ago. (You cannot work here, you don't understand Thai-ness.) thaibeachlovers
Is there a realistic way to correct this subsidence? And why is there a subsidence in the first place? Yes. Because too much underground water is being extracted.
jimbeam1
Might go some way to explain why many Bangkokians have bought land in Nakorn Ratchsaima. Believe it or not, some have bought land upcountry out of fear of the Big Tsunami that various fortune tellers and others have predicted... All put about by "Tourism of Ratchasima" of course. jb1
fakename
More water pushers are needed. This idea has worked in many cities, I just dont remember where! Does anybody have a good reason as to why they NEVER do this (ie bring in outside scientists). You might want to try GOOGLE. This problem was recognized and been warned by many(outside scientists), over 30 years ago. You google it. Find a scientific study, and who did it. If it is Thais, believe me, it is crap. I read one Thai "scientist" say "the solution is to build a wall around Bangkok" lol. My god, really, so so amazingly childish. I think this is bs. We are more at risk of being inundated than sinking; Now, does inundated or sinking make a difference? Not really, effectively. But you DO need to know what problem to focus on. Sinking probably aint it, and if it is, you need real geologists to study it. Edited May 2, 2013 by utalkin2me

It doesn't have to end that "all megapolis" have the same problem. Believe it or not, there are loads of cities in the world, where the air is pretty clean, and you don't break your ankle walking into a pothole. But to achieve this needs someone; somewhere; to say, we will make people pay their taxes, and we won't allow this mall to be crammed in between this slum and these noodle stands. Sorry Mr. Developer, this one rai plot isn't big enough for your 40 story condo complex of 800 rooms that requires parking and roads for 500 cars, down this single lane soi. It needs a plan. Which sounds easy, but takes years of thought, consideration, and people who genuinely serve their country, not a bunch of people waiting for a brown envelope to buy their swipe of a pen.

(serious question)....... you have people that cant solve a problem, so they think about hiring people who can. utalkin2me
I love the title too. Let's act! Doesn't newtons first law come into play here anyway? Do all the acting you want, if it is sinking, it aint going to stop. I still think sinking is not the real problem however.... I would believe it if a competent scientist told me it was however.... after a 10 year study lol. You can't see a caved in road and conclude Bkk is sinking, which is im sure what Thai scientists are basing all this on lol.

Popular Post RickBradford
Thai culture and education actively discourages critical thinking and the ability to judge between alternatives. If you can't judge alternatives, you can't prioritize; if you can't prioritize, you can't plan. Instead, you are limited to sitting around with a slack jaw saying "Mai bpen rai" until the rising water explodes the TV and carries off the family dog. Bangkok is prone to flooding, and always has been. Nothing effective appears to have been done since the video below was filmed.

Not in our life time buddy. Well we all live in hope. I have seen it in the town where I live. This endless desire to cram 5000 rooms of apartments into 2 sq km, with roads that were laid out 50 years ago. Fortunately, it appears that the prospective developers haven't got the cash to go ahead. It is really as though they look at the first 10 sois of Sukhumvit and believe that is some kind of achievement.
