I'm not sure how much rents may differ but I suspect it will be depending on where you are based.

Food is a bit more expensive. Nightlife wise you can expect to pay more too. Lady drinks in new tiger were 200-250 bhat. 1000bf too before 1am.

One of the weird things I noticed between Pattaya and Phuket is that rent is cheaper in Phuket for comparable houses, but, prices to buy are more expensive. This was a few years ago and could have changed by now.

again :-)

it all depends on what u want,

Phuket has rooms from 2,000 baht /month to homes for 200,000/month

Restaurants in Phuket town is same price as Pattaya but at the beach areas it will cost ya more and ON the beach even more again

Villa 7/11 prices are the same in Pattaya as Bangkok and Phuket

Run a search in the phuket thread.

BUY BUY BUY an never deal with them

The way phuket is spread out u really need your own transport unlike Patttaya where its easy to get around

we have our own scooter... and we eat thai food... which is fine for me.

we go out just a few times... thai gf doesn't like so much western food.

we don't drink or party.

so I think phuket is not going to be more expensive than pattaya?

Phuket is more expensive than Pattaya.

It's the little things that you wouldn't think of, like, having to fill your water tank with a water truck because the Government water has run out. Also, simple leisure things like massages, or paying for a swimming pool or a plastic chair on the beach.

Then there are some basic needs in life like haircuts, clothes, household appliances, and you will pay more in fuel here because you will be using your motorbike to go anywhere and everywhere, etc etc.

Also, if you are a visa runner, they will cost you more here.

None of the above will break your bank, but it all adds up to Phuket having a higher cost of living when compared to Pattaya.

We lived in Phuket for four years, when we moved back to Chiang Mai we found that our living expenses had reduced by one third and none of that was down to lifestyle and our rent reduction was only about 5k baht a month - restaurants and food costs saw a big reduction in expenditure.

If your a cheap charly like your nik says. And you don't go out much or eat much foreign food. Why oh why in all sense would you move to Phuket?

I just don't get it!

Really!! Yet the consensus is it's more expensive than Pattaya which is generally more expensive that other parts of Thailand. I must admit I have never been to Phuket.

we move to phuket because girl friend want be near family. so I move with her... and i m happy to get a change of air too.

we are sick of how pattaya became. more traffic, crimes... and i like white beaches in phuket. i like pattaya becasue it was close of the airport, near bkk with his embassies, and 1 hour flight to lao borders.

i have spent a week in phuket 3 years ago. we rent a scooter and we went all around the island. we felt like on vacation... i say" like on vacation" because vacation is my favorite full time job:-). sometimes I need real vacation from my usual vacation in pattaya.

i live my dream life...

"I live my dream life..." - this may become a "nightmare life" on Phuket. :) :)

Never get massages and i see them for 250 baht, same as Pattaya

Swimming pool? We have the Andaman Sea, no need for a pool much better than Pattaya bay.

Plastic chair?? I lay on the beach

Haircuts 100 baht

i have free water from the mountain

Appliances ??Central phuket prices same as Pattaya and Bangkok and how often do u buy them??

Living in Kamala, i have a big C, Tesco, 5 7/11's and 2 3 time a week open market within 2 kms

Visa runs?

1,900 baht phuket to Ranong for visa entry, ( Pattaya to Cambodia border 1,800-2,500 baht PLUS u need add on the $20 for visa)

4,000 baht Phuket-Penang for new visa, includes transport.food, insurance ( lot more for Cambodia as u need pay for visa and stay 3 nights)

None of these things matter

Seems u all are nitpicking at things to make it seem more expensive, IT NOT!!!!

The elephant in the room here is transport costs.

If you loved the songtaews in Patts...you will hate the tuk tuks here.

I just get pissed off having to pay thb200 the minute you get into a tuk tuk or taxi to go even 2 km. to the airport from patong is minimum thb800. In bkk it's 200thb and the distance is the same. They rip off the expats and charge farang prices. Which is bullshit

Next thing you will be telling me you catch a 10 baht bus bus from Kata to Patong. :) :)

as i said i have my car and motorcycle and do not drink, even if i did it would not be in bars on Patong

do u drink in the go go's on walking street??

You all are nit pcking

anyone that lives somewhere in Thailand for more than 6 months should own their own transport

UNLESS ur in Bangkok

The main difference;

Pattaya is a city

Phuket is a resort island

Posted

pattaya no need of scooter... bats bus everywhere... and it s 10 baths, not 20.

i have a scooter anyway and I don't mind to drive around the island.

in walking street in pattaya , there are a few 7/11 where you can buy beer. people walk along the street with their beer in hand.

many ugly ladies in pattaya. how is phuket?
