Looking for some advice please.

I am living here on a Retirement Visa. I am married to a Thai national and we have a young son together.

I am looking to supplement my income by getting some casual-part time work.

I think I recall somewhere that having a retirement Visa prevents me from doing any sort of work at all.

If so, what can I do to overcome this legally, so I can still live here and work.

Thank you.

You would have to change to Thai wife extension of stay and obtain a work permit - which is not likely to be available for part time work.

You do not change a visa you change the reason for your extension of stay from retirement to being married to a Thai lady.

I've known a couple of people who got wp's for 10 hours a week.

Last semester I was part time and obtained a Work Permit. I also had an extension of stay due to retirement but as it did NOT have an 'employment prohibited' stamp on it, this was also acceptable to Imm & Labour Office.

Casual part time work does not appear to be something a work permit is likely to be available for - your examples seem to be a scheduled part time employee. As for work permit on retirement extension it happens but only rarely - most labor offices flatly refuse to issue on such an extension of stay from reporting here.

I just checked out my passport Visa stamps and on the TR Visa it has 'Employment Prohibited' but on my Non-Immigrant 'O' Retirement there is no such restriction! As it appears very possible that I will be gaining employment I really need to get things moving. My prospective employer spoke to me about the Work Permit and questioned whether the change might be required at all. My work classification would be 'Freelance Trainer'

I am prepared to change the Visa classification to Marriage if need be, but if I don't have to, then I won't.

Any advice appreciated. I guess a trip to Chonburi Immigration will be in order too. If I do need to change Visa's, will I need to provide another letter 'Proof of Income' as the original one was provided in October 2012.

Cheers.

It is the Department of Employment, not the immigration office, you should ask whether they will give you a work permit while you are on a retirement extension.

At the immigration office, you can ask if you will need a new embassy letter regarding your income if you change from retirement extension to marriage extension.

The DoE doesn't care if your job is full time or part time. They only care that you are paid the minimum monthly salary for your nationality. The hours you work is between you and your employer.

Er no the DOL dont care what your paid, minumum or otherwise...your getting confused with minimum salaries stated for extension of stay, which is an immigration requirement not a DOL requirement

Hightly unlikely you will be given a full work permit with a job title like "freelance trainer"....technically speaking you cant be "freelance" anything, you would be tied into your Thai employer, A Thai WP doesnt allow you to work "freelance" per se....also Chonburi immigration knowing a few guys who have gone back to work after being on "retirement visa's" they were required to get themselves Non-imm B's, however you may be ok on a marriage extension, but pretty sure they will not do it on a retirement visa

I have a visa extension based on retirement and have had five WPs from 3 different labour offices and there never was a problem.

I got mine in Isaan too, so maybe yet another case of every Thai Imm office playing with differing rules.

You are also married to a Thai I believe? Perhaps Labor offices took that under consideration in issuing the work permits?

Yes, I am married to a Thai and last time I got a WP (Roi-et) they asked for a copy of my marriage certificate, but the two times before that (Mukdahan, Kalasin) they did not.
