BANGKOK, May 21 - Thailand's Muslim-predominant far South is under control with the government's peace talks with militant groups to continue, a senior Thai security official reasserted today.

National Security Council (NSC) secretary general Paradorn Pattanatabut said the government has maintained peace in southern border provinces, particularly during the start of the new school term.

A new round of peace dialogues with leaders of the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) movement will be held June 13 as scheduled, he said, adding that the BRN's proposals and feedback from the local population in the three southern border provinces will be concluded before the. meeting.

The June 13 peace talks, the third session since both sides agreed to jointly find solutions to the southern violence, will be held in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur - the venue of the first two meetings.

Lt Gen Paradorn said the Thai government and the BRN group agreed in the last meeting that all proposals will be put on the negotiation table, and not [beforehand] on the Internet as was the case prior to the second peace talks.

He said a proposal by former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyuth to announce the three southern border provinces as a 'special administrative region' will not be taken into the Thai authorities' consideration as it is in contrast to the BRN demand. (MCOT online news).

If he means under control as in it is confined to the South of Thailand I would agree

Otherwise, not really under control.

Otherwise, not really under control.

I think he means they are being successful at keeping most of it out of the media

I'm sure all those living in daily fear, those who have lost people to bombs and those injured on an almost daily basis will heartily agree.

Till the next bomb! Whenever Thai officials say its under control. Thats the time to worry!

Yes but under whose control?

Wonder how much the BRN are being paid to attend these talks, as well as the 5 star accommodation while there.

easy statement to make from the confines of a safe Bangkok office, how about getting off your ass and taking a closer look.

i'm sure the terrorist scum are telling their followers the same message, though they may disagree on who is actually exercising control.

So he won't mind taking a leisurely tour around the deep south then just to put everyone's mind at rest.

What a load of crap !!!!!!

Total BS! Ain't nothin' under control until there is a definitive decrease in the mayhem.

I heard the same pronouncement 12 years ago.

I often get the feeling that nothing is under control in Thailand and that the country is a hotbed of anarchy. Makes life interesting though.

When my son was a teenager growing up, that use be one of his frequent comments to any concern I expressed. I always felt somewhat relieved, until he pointed out what it meant in teen talk. By defination, 2 trains rushing toward each other on the same track are "under control"
