While in many countries you cannot get US dollars but only local currency, at airports and such they do sometimes have foreign currency ATM's, just like they have at the airport in BKK and you can get US-dollars there from the ATM.

You can use local Thai credit / debit cards at the foreign currency ATM's but only those issued by SCB.

I would guess that the reason the Op asked that question is because most ATM's in Cambodia dispense USD.

Yes exactly right i asked because in Cambodia i got USD withdrawls from my forang bank card was hoping for the same in Lao. With one answer comes another question (actually) another 2:

1.) Are you better off using laos kip you withdraw from the ATM than usd?

2.) is the usd better value for money in Lao than the kip? (while i was in cambodia usd was better value for money, Cam money no.2, and thai bath terrible value)

Just a note - from my experience there is a limit to the amount you can withdraw from a Lao ATM and, if my memory serves me correctly it is about 2,500 baht with a withdrawal fee of 150 baht. Much better to use ATM withdrawals only in an emergency

Guess it's possible. Some of the local banks in Cambodia have less than salubrious pedigree.

I would find it hard to believe that could happen at a bank like ANZ though.

NOT true

whenever i fly out i always get US$ from my Thai SCB atm

Note,

ALL Cambodian atm's ( none will give u riel) give u US $$ regardless of the country that's issued ur card.

also ( at least in Phuket) it is very easy to buy unlimited amount of US$ Lats time i brought $12,000 from the scb, only showed my passport

In Lao i just exchange Thai baht to KIp

AS to counterfeit us $$ never have gotten one in 7 years of traveling there nor heard of anyone that had.
